I’m slathering on amber and I think it looks great. The tree’s got a healthy, ruddy complexion now, I don’t see how people have a problem with it. To say nothing of the vibrant plumage, that luxurious coifed mane, those perfectly straight teeth. Practically a Greek statue now.
From generator skeleton? Considering it’s bird week that may be a nice investment.
Even bone market lags a lot while the Hinterlands play decent.
Hi folks! Just popping in to say that we’ve made some underlying structural changes to the Christmas tree event this morning that we hope will improve performance.
I expected the Beauty vs Health tug-of-war to be similar to the Crate Commotion event, with a progress bar which moves either direction depending on the players’ responses.
I suspect either outcome will have ramifications on the 8th of December.
… and the game has never been more fluid! No hint of lag anywhere.
I confess I’m intrigued. How did putting the Tree storylet into its own closed-off area help with the lag problem?
Take note of the other structural change, which requires a locked storylet to function: World Qualities are only updated when you leave the area.
That makes complete sense as an optimization. Twenty actions on brushing the tree’s coat now only updates global state once instead of twenty times. Batching updates to reduce lock contention, a tale as old as time. Or at least timesharing mainframes.
…my big question is how does this work!?! I would assume each action tracks heartiness & quality as hidden personal qualities. But the usual means to observe hidden qualities aren’t working, even though they should. Whatever’s tracking this, it’s different from regular Storynexus hidden qualities.
MUCH faster now, thank you for working on this!
I see heartiness is now massively outstripping beauty. We need more fire hazards! And fewer urchins. Hopefully not the latter because of the former, though, that seems a bit harsh.
What did The Lachrymose Arborist mean to say about the bones and the trees when picking up your rewards?
Bones: […] A note of iron enters her voice. “There are many, many more where that creature came from.”
Trees: […] “Many of London’s trees are not real trees,” she says reluctantly. “And some of London’s real trees roam about. Have you met the daughter of London’s oldest yew?”[…]
The latter is a reference to the Summer Schoolmistress, who you can meet in Licentiate professional activities and in the Whitsun fate-locked summer nursery storyline. The latter makes it explicit that the Schoolmistress is the daughter of the Totteridge Yew. She is also apparently referenced, but not seen, in Mask of the Rose.
The first is probably not about anything specific, just that the Department of Parks and Game has to deal with a lot of big monsters trying to lurk in the parks.
This got a lot faster again which is great. Seems like the “Fir’s Beauty” and “Fir’s heartiness” are just fully gone from the Progress area.
Anyone got any way of tracking this stuff? I wanna make sure I’m not making the tree too pretty.
I can see the progress. At the moment it says
The Fir’s Beauty 1,709,775
The Fir’s Heartiness 2,726,390
I’m a bit of a newbie— still trying to become a PoSI— grinding for a Zubmarine now. What is the best thing for my level in arborist’s gratitude? And is it worth finding a quick echo grind to get a semiotic Monocle? Sorry if these questions have been answered elsewhere. I’ve looked but haven’t been able to find anything!
Edit: I just did some calculations. It seems like every option in arborist’s gratitude but the leviathan frame (which according to the wiki you can’t sell?) gives you 0.01 echoes per gratitude. Not that that’s a super helpful comparison!
Correct, Arborist Gratitude is worth 1 penny regardless of reward. But, Dreadful Surmise can get extra value in the Rat Market, and Leviathan Frame can get extra value in the Bone Market. If you’re not a POSI, the Bone Market is still far in the future for you.
Do grab Pulsating Amber if you don’t already have one, they’re somewhat harder to get otherwise.
I am trying so hard to catch the Beauty up to the Heartiness, and it is just not working. I hope just the fact that they’re both really high is good enough and we don’t get any negative consequences for it being not that pretty for how strong it is. Insecure mutant tree going on a rampage for tinsel?
Also, I’ve just been noticing, it’s not just the Fir tree storylet that’s faster, the Myself tab is loading instantly lately! Not sure if it’s all the work they’ve been doing right now or if it’s been like that for a while and I didn’t notice, but way to go, Failbetter!
Tomorrow we find out what kind of monster we’ve made!
Yeah but if the tree is too sparkly then maybe it becomes a second Dawn Machine.
What’s on y’alls Bingo Card for Monday?
- The Tree is so beautiful, that the Consort is moved to tears
- The Tree is so healthy, that the Arborist is moved to tears
- The Empress is so angry, that the tree is moved to the Khanate
- The Tree is so moving, and the Department of Park & Games can’t catch it
- The Admiralty is nowhere to be seen [FREE SPACE]
- A second tree, so they can be friends
- The Bazaar tries to drink memories of sunlight out of the tree like a capri sun
The empress being grumpy about it feels like a free space like the admiralty being absent
I’ve been working almost exclusively on Heartiness because I want the tree to be so, uh, healthy, that nobody can come within 50 feet without passing out. After the Empress expected everyone else to work on keeping it alive, it only seems fair.
If something does happen I hope there’s a one line tidbit in there about the Schoolmistress if you’ve met her through being a Licentiate or the Fate story with her.
My guess? London falls for the classic quota trap - the tree is doing so well that the Empress demands we provide more trees of even better quality year-round.
