I’m at Demeaux Island. There are several choices of what I can do: talk to the Factor, enlist a new crewman, etc. When I choose one of them and finish that action, then the others are no longer available.
So, for instance, I let the crewman on board. Then, when I check the Story tab again, there’s nothing available - I can’t have tea with the Factor or explore the island.[li]
At that point, I can save the game, load it again, and BAM - all three options are back.
This feels like a bug - either the options shouldn’t be gone, or the save and re-load shouldn’t let them come back.
There are a couple of places where you can launch and immediately redock to get all the options back as well. I can’t remember if Demeaux Island is one of them or not.
But what I often find annoying is that I can’t tell when a given action would lock others out and when each action affects just itself. It’s inconsistent.
I’m only a forum mod and can’t speak for Failbetter, but I wouldn’t expect them to close a thread just for discussing a possible bug in a just-released early beta! Personally, agree that it wouldn’t hurt to make it clearer which stories are reliant on the evolving story quality and thus mutually-exclusive, but it’s not necessarily a massive bug if they all are in that given port, and it’s good that you’ve reported your concerns. Maybe in future updates, we’ll be able to take tea -and- do some exploring - we shall see!
I don’t believe this is an actual bug, In Demeaux Island, the 3 options all depends on the "Stories await you" thing the first time you arrive and it can only be used once. Therefore, if you pick one option, it mean you forgoes the other 2.
The only bug I notice is the save, quit and load thing that allows you to bypass the "Stories await you" thing, and it can happen on other ports too, not just on Demeaux Island. And even if you take advantage of it, it’s way too tedious.

My concern is/was more for the exploit that N156 noted: save-load permits one to repeat any port story an unlimited number of times. This has several obvious issues :).
Given this thread’s title, I thought I’d use it for other things which might be a bug or not:
Starting a new game, I’ve set zail from London with 8 crew members on board.
I’ve fought and killed one giant crab, but it got luck and killed one of my crew (7 remaining).
Then I’ve fought another crab and as far as I could notice it didn’t land a hit on me (but I can’t be sure), docked at Hunter’s Keep, played a few storylets there (without paying much attention) and zailed on. Then I’ve checked my ship status and noticed that I have 10 crew members on board (instead of 7). Somehow, 3 got added between the first crab fight and leaving Hunter’s Keep.
I assume this is a bug, but can’t be sure. Is it possible that some rare option on Hunter’s Keep would grant new crew members? (I assume the second giant crab didn’t spit out 3 new crew members at my ship).
I am half-expecting this thread to be administratively-closed: this is by far the biggest bug I have reported thus far, a couple of days ago.
To protect the integrity of the beta, please co-operate with the persons waiting in black vans outside your workplace and abode.
Some may object that habeas corpus is a sacred constitutional principle. But our lawyers assure us that it is as nothing compared with the public discussion of exploits in a video game.
In that case, until this is fixed I’d stick to my theory that the zea monster spits back to my ship those zailors who fell in previous battles. Death in the Neath being what it is, I assume that being swallowed by a giant zea monster is only a mild inconvenience. :-)
I once lost a crew member to MT. Nomad, then somehow I gain not 1 lost crew member, but a full 41 member, maximizing my crew compartment. Then I lost all 41 crew members in a single random event.
