I have a question. What is the best way to get each item needed for this luck based quest?
Well, I got Correspondence Plaques from one of Implacable Detective Card cases. You get 30 of them if you build up related quality to over 60. But, then, that is luck-based as well, so, not sure how reliable that is
Whilst we’re on that note, Identities are usually upconverted into from Incendiary Gossip, which can be gained by using that very same Detective’s Card from before when you have a case.
Much information can be found here: Fidgeting Writer: updated shopping list - Google Sheets
By the way an_ocelot, I’m pretty sure they nerfed the University grinding method - I heard it gave less Investigating now. That or raiding a message-drop pays out less.
Also, how does chatting with Mrs Plenty for Incendiary Gossip compare to Refreshments if you don’t have Jade already?

I can’t grind at the University so someone else needs to investigate that and get back to me!
EPA getting Incendiary Gossip and then converting to Identity Uncovered at 2 Gossip / action is 0.96 if my massive jet-lag and sleep-deprivation isn’t misleading me, which is worse than even getting the Jade from scratch (1.08).
While it isn’t sustainable, it has a profit EpA of 1.5, and turns the generally impractical whispered secrets into another echo of gossip, letting you make 10 identities uncovered every 11 actions, though at the cost of 1000 whispered secrets and 10 business cards. [assuming you found it worth starting a case with no intent to finish, ofc.] there’s a point in the game where these things are absurdly common, though- especially if you’re raising watchful using the constables’ op card. Worth noting for those who already have them, though not worth seeking them out for.
I just checked Raid a Message Drop and More Then Just Messages and don’t see anything different. I’ll check the University content in a bit, but I’m out of actions. Interview the Dept… seems the same at least.
Edit: Ok, so if you’re pretty sure then I’m willing to believe you that something changed, but I can’t find it. All payouts in Investigations are the same, and the Flit cash in doesn’t seem to have been altered either. I also checked the odds of success on Raid and those remain at 70% while at 5 Investigating. Is there something I missed?

I may be misremembering exactly what was changed, but I had heard via a wiki comment that something about the process was less profitable. Or it might have been something else in the University which was more profitable than options elsewhere.
Thanks for the advice all, but I must ask: can someone just give me the best options in a list like for example:
Plaques: Do such and such.
Candles: Seek the name I MEAN DO affair of the box or something.

That’s actually all in An_Ocelot’s link. We were just offering alternatives.
Transcribing the sources from the link:
- Steal Tales of Terror!! via Thefts of a Particular Character in the Flit
- Steal Journals of Infamy via Thefts, side-convert to Correspondence Plaques then Visions of the Surface
- Steal Journals again, side-convert to Plaques
- Steal Brilliant Souls
- Grind Jade through Watchmaker’s Hill Unfinished Business as needed, get Refreshments in Labyrinth of Tigers first coil for Incendiary Gossip with the added benefit of Wounds and Unaccountably Peckish reduction. (Alternatively, with Acquainted with Miriam Plenty’s Past, chat with her in the Carnival at slightly lower Gossip gain but using a Persuasive challenge.) Convert Gossip upwards to Identities Uncovered.
- Steal Tales of Terror!! or Journals of Infamy and convert up to Extraordinary Implications
- Grind Mourning Candles via Affair of the Box
Actually, I find that grinding Visions through the Criminals-20 Opp Card, ‘A merry sort of crime’, is more profitable. working out to 136 ppA if my math is accurate.

It requires you to draw that card, a Favour, and have Criminals 20, of course. But thanks for the reminder as I’ve a nice stash of honey from it already.
The watchmakers hill option now averages only 125.25 jade per action according to the wiki
While investigating the murder in the department of _______ at the University, the “talk to the porters” option costs 25 Cryptic Clues, with a success reward of 108 Whispered Hints, a Sudden Insight, and +4 cp of Investigating. Since it is itself a Watchful challenge, you can use a Sudden Insight on every attempt for very reliable success.
“Raid a message-drop” in the Heights of Chicanery in the Flit requires Investigating 5, which takes four actions via “ask the porters”, and returns 270 Cryptic Clues. With no failures, that’s 4 actions at +0.58 each and 1 action at +5.40, for an average profit of 1.54 echoes per action. If you fail the Investigating test once, you only need one more action to get it back up to 5, and those cycles return 1.18 EPA. It’s a very nice way to grind for Embroiled in the Wars of Illusion.
