Curious about what can and can’t be done with items in SN.
Can the number of stats that an item grants somehow be improved through player actions?
Can items be combined with each other to make new ones?
Is there any way for a player to customize the items they have in some way? Can they change the names of items, like you can name a ship in FL?
Can players in any way create brand new, custom items?
And if there aren’t obvious solutions to any of these questions, are there any clever workarounds I can use?
Howdy, and welcome to StoryNexus! Let me see if I can’t field some of this.

Items can’t be changed dynamically in play. Off the top of my head, the best workaround here is to create multiple versions of an item (e.g. Plain Iron Sword, Fancy Iron Sword, Fancy Elven Iron Sword) with escalating quality changes, and when a player does whatever to upgrade the item, remove the old item and grant the new one.

Not as part of the items system. But a workaround here is easy. Create a storylet branch that combines them. For example: in your Roadside Smithy storylet, you can have a Forge an Iron Sword branch. It’s locked unless the player owns 5x Iron Ore and 1x Leather Wrap. When they play through the branch, the Iron Ores and Leather Wrap are removed and an Iron Sword is added.

Unfortunately, no and no.
