They couldn’t. Clay Men would likely be destroyed when exposed to the Judgements as they’re a little too much "Is Not" than is allowed in daylight.
Another interesting question - where do you dig the hole?
Because you don’t dig a well up, and anyone trying to dig a well down from the Surface is, given Neath geography, probably going to cover all of Europe in holes without ever finding the place.
(I revise my earlier statement about the Canal. That was a hole that was already there, apparently.)

The Canal, Travertine Spiral, and Aestival are all reference points. You can triangulate anywhere you want! In theory.

Clearly you just have to dig up the entire surface then. You’re bound to hit the Neath somewhere.
The Neath is huge. Any spot in Eastern Europe leads to the Neath.
