( By Tommy Wi ) I love this game. This and Rat-sending sim. are only storynexus game (FL not included) that I play these days. What a delicious and moist world to exlpore!
While I know this is beta, I have some frustration, though. Action refill is very slow, yet almost every basic action requires it. The fact that action counter get resetted when you sail away doesen't help either - Even stuff like buying only single crate or talking tend to cost valuable action.
In addition, distance between islands tend to be very far (journey using CP mechanic doesen't help, really.), requiring very long time + provision. I found that "dying" in steppeholt was much better than sailing through 11 Journey Level. There's also a problem that 'sailing sky' part quickly gets tedious and bothersome... in a game about sailing sky. Even FL Unterzee is more interesting.
* Also, limited stat, lack of Category 2 licenses, difficulty of engine repair (does "engine part" even exist for now?), and infrequent price (Example: 5 ore cost 600 to buy, but 370 when selling.) are also bothersome. More might be added.
Short ver : Awesowe game with great potential, but Action-drought is sort of problem (something like restoration cycle of Rat sending sim. would be nice). Sailing gets tedious and irritating after 2~3 time, and CP mechanic make it too long. Also see * .
PS: Is it intentional for only way to get Category 1 license is undertaking Republic Mercantile Registry quest, despite saying that there is cheaper but riskier sources? Or did I just missed it?

I'd say I quite enjoy traveling between isles, EXCEPT when I desperately need something (say, some wood) and literally ANY card pops out except what I need (say, Greengrass XD). edited by streetfelineblue on 10/7/2013

I actually enjoy the sailing, especially the longer journeys where I need to manage provision and damage much more carefully.

I just wanted to say that I'm really enjoying Maelstrom. I've banned myself from spending any money on games for a bit (one Steam sale too many), but I'm sure I'll be spending Nex in it soon!

I have one suggestion: The Rock is currently not very interesting, because the only trade good you can buy with a category 1 license is ore, which is not very profitable because of the low value and the long journey needed to sell it. I went there for the storylet, but I don't have any reason to go there anymore, and that's too bad. Is this intentional? Otherwise you could consider selling something else there.

I really like this game so far! I'm extremely new so I haven't figured out how to work the system yet, but one problem I've run into is acquiring timber for hull repairs. I'll be sitting on Blackstone for the next 12 hours trying to harvest enough wood to repair five points of hull damage (5 action points per attempt). Could there possibly be more cards in the sailing deck that let you make headway without risking hull damage?

I'm still really enjoying this, but I'm beginning to wonder if there's something I'm missing. Or maybe I've just not ground enough. Or maybe I'm up against a content wall. It's things such as:
- I've got a first officer, but he doesn't appear to do or affect anything.
- I'm collecting lots of rumours and reputation, but likewise they don't seem to do anything (although some do).
- I got a first level trading licence and did the mission for the archaeologists, but no plots seem to have developed further.
Any ideas...?

Mizushimo, with 5 hull damage, you should be able to sail without major accidents as long as you are careful not to get any more. So stock up (get enough that you don't have to take any risks) and sail to Greengrass, where you can buy timber. On the way, you might be able to harvest enough from the small islands to get the first point repaired. Cyberpunkdreams, the game is still in development, so the first officer doesn't do anything yet and the next part of the archeologist's story isn't written either. I also haven't found a use for most connections, although some play a part in a story on The Rock, and haven't found a use for sky stories and extraordinary sights either. However, I have found a use for all my rumours, though that sometimes involves some swapping from one kind of rumours to another. I'm posting the details under a spoiler tag:
You can swap five rumours of profit for ten rumours of discovery in the open skies card "The Honesty". You can sell rumours of discovery in Capital to the archeologists. You can swap rumours of revolution for rumours of war using one of the cards in Portdown, if I'm remembering correctly. You can swap 20 rumours of war for one chest of weapons in the open skies card about the rangers (a black ship on the horizon, I believe). You can sell that chest of weapons either in The Rock or in Steppeholt. You can sell five rumours of politics in the Capital card "Blotter Square.
edited by Loon on 10/27/2013

Hey, thanks for the response. I understand that it's still a work in progress, so fair enough about things not being complete. It can be frustrating when you don't know whether you're not progressing because you've hit a content wall or because something isn't finished yet though. It might be a good idea to add a little note to things that aren't useful or can't be done yet. For example, looking for things to do, I went back to Blackstone thinking I might find more stuff (e.g. Curios), but gave up when I got as far as Treading Dark Passages 12 without reaching anywhere, not know whether I was barking up the wrong tree or not. I think I'd figured out how to use all my rumours though, thanks!
Anyway, I'm still really enjoying the game overall (the above definitely isn't criticism by the way!) Just started hunting pirates in fact...

Yeah, it's been noted in the thread several times already that going back to Blackstone doesn't bring you much, except a few curios. But people usually check the thread after they've made that mistake... I've played all the content for now, I believe, but I do still sail around and get richer and richer. Never know when that will come in use... And Lily Fox does add new stuff regularly.

Yes, I'm still sailing too. It's still quite fun, even when there's not much new stuff.

Biggest things I've noted: -Stats aren't increasing for my major attributes at this stage which is frustrating. I would have no problem starting lower so I can build them up because then I'd feel I'm accomplishing something. -Menace qualities: at what point do I need to worry about these things? etc. A warning of do not let these get up to x or y may happen would be useful. Unless you want players to be in the dark. -I already got the young lieutenant, does the pirate feel the same role? Can I use both? -Supplies for my ship. Are we to assume this is likely enough provisions or are we to buy more at first? Because since I haven't had a voyage yet I don't have an idea. Of course I'm sure things will change as we go along but some guidelines would be nice. -That card with the betting and very unlikely odds always annoys me when it comes up because I never use it. Why spend money on something I'm not going to win? I doubt I'm the only one to feel this way. Unless it's clear there's a high reward if you win I think most people will not play it when earning money is slow at the start. -I do really like the setup, idea, and the medicine characteristic that is cool. I am also sure the game will get more intriguing as I go but for right now it's going fairly slow and I can't even level grind very well.

I've just completed a battle with a pirate brig and I've somehow managed to get myself stuck on the event "VICTORY! - The crew's fate." I've now chosen each of the three options multiple times apiece, but every time I am returned to the same screen. Mind you, I now enjoy a full crew of 90, I have 30 prisoners in my cargo hold, my dissent level is 0, and my reputation with the Terrisel Navy is now 17. Huzzah! But is there anything that can be done to get me out of this loop? My character's name is Malcolm Reynolds and the associated Twitter account is @Prof_Dodgson. Thank you!
Oh, one more thing. There are a few story options here and there that require the quality "Impossible!" Is that available anywhere in the game yet?

The point of impossible! is that it isn't available. When the option is finished the requirement will disappear.

Prof_Dodgson -- Thanks for the post! That is the luckiest bug, and I'm grinning thinking of that. Congratulations(?), hehe.
I've taken a look at the storylet in question, and it was the oversight that caused the bug has been removed and it should now be fixed. =) You may need to choose an option again, but then you'll be taken to 'VICTORY! - The ship's fate' to continue.
