From what I read, a patron ups most of your skills and boost a specific one. Could anyone explain to me how does the patron system work and how can I acquire one?

You post on http://community.failbettergames.com/topic6084-protgs-seeking-patrons-only-protgs-need-post.aspx and ask for a patron. This will allow them to increase one of your skills up to 100 at the cost of free evenings.
