Iirc a loading screen tooltip said torpedos don't raise your illumination when using them.
Which is, in its current state, a fairly trivial advantage since fights basically come in two varieties: the kind where you need to evade at least every other action to stay alive, and the kind where illumination is completely irrelevant.
Also I'd agree that right now harpoons are overpowered and really the first thing I'd buy is a Caminus Yards Heart-Ender for exactly that reason.
