Suppose that your character in Fallen London had the chance to create one or more pieces of singular personal equipment, (or acquire one or more singular pets or companions, etc), which would be unique and best-suited to your character.
The question is, what would such item(s) be, and what benefits (or drawbacks) would they provide?

A sample item follows:

Mr. Wines' Stone Jar
If you have to ask, you won't be able to drink it.
Persuasive+2

I look forward to seeing your character's unique curiosities!

Not necessarily for a specific character, but I had to share this one...

Companion:
Robed Bat
"THAT'S MR BAT, TO YOU. CARRY US." Where did it get a robe that small?
+2 Watchful, -1 Dangerous

(Opportunity card: Mr Bat's Demands.
Small, squeaky, imperious, and convinced it's a Master of the Bazaar. Mr Bat demands an appropriate retinue.

[IGNORE]
Well, now you've done it. It's gone and hired servants while you weren't looking. Don't ask what it's paying them.

gain: 3x Sulky Bat.

[REFUSE]
The resulting tantrum draws a crowd. It's the best street theatre they've seen all day, and some of them toss money. Shame the shrieking was so close to your ear...

gain: 20 Nevercold Brass Slivers
gain: Wounds)

Wouldn't a Constant Companion who gives Nightmares make it impossible to escape the Royal Beth? As far as I know it can only be brought down by -2 using the cane and fish, and if a player didn't have either of those they might be stuck permanently.

Vake Costume
You are vengeance. You are the night. You are the Vake. Or at least you dress up like it.
Shadowy +5, Persuasive -2, Bizarre +1

Just a Shadowy version of the Dandy's outfit so it isn't too powerful.
Come now. Persons of Some Importance are simultaneously great detectives, master thieves, experts in combat, scientists, wealthy, and beloved playboys (or playgirls of playsquidthings). Remind you of anyone? No one else wants to dress up as the Vake and fight crime? Oh, just me? Awkward.

Originally, I was writing ideas for equipment for the recent complete sets thread, but I realized that these ideas fit much better here. They aren't personal for my character, but instead ideas for items to be created in-game.

    Cloak of a Phantom
    (Clothing)
They say this cloak once sheltered an orphan who now sings at Mahogany Hall. They say it was weaved by a mad conjurer in Mazandaran or Constantinople. They say it was once sold at auction in the Opera de Paris after an unsolved murder. They say it is blessed by angels of darkness, who take wearers into dreams of night and song. No one has to know it's just an old cloak from Gottery's. That would ruin the fantasy.

Unlocked with x1 Shabby Opera Cloak, x1 Parabola-Linen Scraps, x25 Thirsty Bombazine Scraps, x25 Whisper-Satin Scraps, x10 Appalling Secrets

    (+6 Shadowy, +6 Watchful, +1 Bizarre, +1 Nightmares)

    ----

    A Vault of Surface-Treasures
    (Home Comfort)
Jade and porcelain stolen from the Forbidden City, amphorae from Greek antiquity, Byzantine icons looted in the Sack of Constantinople, a replica of one of Versailles's great salons - the treasury you've amassed would be the envy of any Empress. It cost you a fortune to bring it all to the Neath, and not a few bribes, but now it's all yours. It's very popular with the dinner guests.

Unlocked with x10,000 Fistfuls of Surface Currency, x10 Comprehensive Bribes, x5 Favours: Society, x5 Favours: The Docks, x5 Favours: Constables

    A Melliferous Habit (Clothing)
Embroidered in crimson and gold. The gloves are carefully waxed, the veil thick.
    Dangerous +5; Watchful +2; Bizarre +1

    Exile’s Misfortune (Gloves)
At this stage, the infection resembles the tangled stems of the Exile’s Rose, creeping sinuously up your arms. As it sinks deeper, you’ll feel the jungle heat of Parabola beneath your skin.
Watchful +3; Wounds +1; Memory of Light +1

    A Set of Reminders (Weapon)
Colored strings around your fingers, to keep your patchwork self stitched up.
    Nightmares -2; Steadfast +3

But would it be everlasting agony if the person had already ingested Hesperidean Cider beforehand? The only truly scientific way to test it would be it give one to someone who's has the cider before- in this case, me- and then give another to someone who hasn't had cider, as a control. Maybe you, Little The? You seem in rather eager to help in the name of science.

It would be nice if there were something that reduced scandal. With the currently available accoutrements, you can take your suspicion up and down, you can reduce your wounds and nightmares, but scandal you can only raise. You can even buy, for mere pennies, cures from Nikolas & Sons or F.F. Gebrandt for the other major menaces, but no one's selling a scandal cure. Even tea with the Dauntless Temperance Campaigner isn't reducing my scandal today. Standards at this tea shop have slipped to a deplorable level. About all I can do now is spend the entire blasted day in church.

    Thus:
    Stiff-Brimmed Bonnet

    Prim, proper, and dreadfully uncomfortable.
    -2 Scandal, -1 Bizarre

    Iron Waistcoat
    Category: Clothing
Only a Clay Man could stand to wear this thing for long. By the end of the day, your ribs are bruised.
    -4 Scandal, +2 Wounds

Oh, and for sale in the Bazaar:
    Tiny Flask of Cantigaster Venom
A thimble-sized portion of bitter liquid. This will remove all your scandal, but will take you to a place you may not wish to go. Don't drink it!

... And then, when you drink it:
You no longer have any of this: Scandal
You have moved to a new location: A slow boat passing a dark beach on a silent river

Stars alone know how you've managed to restrain the mangy beast, never mind acquire enough material for a coat. It amuses itself with little vengeful pecadilloes like moaning during the quiet parts of the Mass, when you're slipping past a constable, silently staking out suspects, or trying to listen for a coming enemy. Seems to move around your house while you're not looking. Then your food starts to go missing. Is it looking even fuller and more luxurious than it was yesterday? Perhaps one day it'll wake and simply wander off again in search of foolish souls.

Well, of course, items that allow you to romance various characters immediately spring to mind (not that I think of women as objects), but I''l do one for each account:

Mutable Key (Weapon) Shadowy +3 Bizarre +1
This key opens, like most others, only one door, of course. It just seems to be rather confused about which one sometimes...

As a proud weasel fancier and owner of many weasels I would wish for the following:

    Eclipse Weasel

Description: It has been said that things that don't exist are the hardest to find. This is of course wrong. The hardest to find thing is the shadow drenched Eclipse Weasel for whom the material world means nothing. Good grief, it's gone again! Is it under there? No. Sigh...

Wow. I really wish I had found this before. It looks REALLY cool.

Alright. One for each of my characters.

    A Mirror Of Questionable Relfectiveness
A prototype from your anarchist friends. It absorbs the light from all but a select few angles. Perfect for peaking around a corner while the constables are rushing in. It's rather fragile though, and it's hardly polite to lend a 'trick mirror'. Not to mention that they couldn't get rid of the viric tint. What ever did happen to the testers.

What I wish the "Drownie Song of the Deep" was. Nightmares and all. I've been using both the song and the everlasting candle since I've acquired them. Both having been replaced only briefly by the memento of struggle.

    A Name Written Somewhere Else
It doesn't matter where you write it. On a book, in a study, on a sheet of lead, as an initial, as a signature, or on a headstone. And half of them from before you came to the neath. Maybe it's why you seek, maybe it's why you don't care. You will go NORTH. You will find more than just His name.
    Watchful +10, Obscurity +3.
    [start the game with this]

A meta joke. I've never bothered to put my seeking alt in my signature after I created it. I eventually realized that was probably for the best.

Edit: Reworded the mirror a bit. Tried to make it a bit more consistent with the persuasive drop.

Oh dear. It seems your Spirifer has had a rather nightmarish dream and is trying to resort to the only thing he knows well: stealing souls. The only problem is that he's trying to extract the souls out of your animal companions.

Talk some sense into him (persuasive challenge)
Come now friend settle down. You can't extract souls from animals, that's ridiculous. Look here, you already have souls.
Success: You calm him down with words of reason. He goes back to his bottled souls and gives you some as a gift before falling back into his tormented dreams. Reward: Persuasive is increasing: ?cp You've gained 45~100 Souls.
Smack some sense into him (dangerous challenge)
You can't let him extract the souls of your animals. You don't know if he can. You don't even know if animals have souls. But no doubt that fork is going to do damage to your prized companions.
Success: A quick blow to the head and he's out cold. He's simply sleeping don't worry. On his descent to the floor some brass fell out of his pockets. Reward: Dangerous is increasing: ?cp You've gained 90~200 Nevercold Brass
The Starveling Cat! (unlocked, of course, with the starveling cat)
Oh dear. Oh no that's no good at all. You don't give a d**n about the cat, it's your spirifer you're worryed about.
I think this might be a single output storylet or meybe a metter of luck. I'm thinking you either lose the spirifer and gain some dark knowledge, or your spirifer is changed into a Raving Spirifer: He only whispers, mutters, and screams one thing: The Name. IDK though since I didn't create the starveling cat and I don't know the writers' intentions with it.

The spider in question is not a Sorrow-Spider, rather it is some offshoot of the Theological Husbandry storyline. I would advise against it actually. I played a game like that once called Metroplexity. It was fun but often you would end up wasting some of your buffs and lead to some annoying situations. It would also mean adding more new features and with all of the current bugs I would rather have new stories than a new mechanic.

That way, it's easy to get there but hard to get out.

Actually, it would make it easier to get out. Equipment doesn't add CP to your stats, so if you removed it, you would still only be at 1. Generally, a single action in a menace area will remove that -- this would essentially give the menace areas revolving doors.

Sounds pretty beneficial to me! smile

Unless it worked like items which increase Menaces. If you put them on when you have none of the Menace it gives, it permanently raises a point of that Menace.

It would have to be +6 then, otherwise it really would be impossible to get out of a menace area. Even so, the difference between levels 1 and 2 is really minor. So it costs me two actions to get in or out instead of one; no biggie.

But how would you control which menace area it sent you to? With all four being activated at once, wouldn't it just send you to any one of them randomly?

Except it's +7, not +8. I'd go to whichever one I got a point of menace in first.

Ah, that's true. Perhaps you're only able to remove it in a Menace area? That way, it's easy to get there but hard to get out.

Possible Opportunity Card drawing because of the Spirifer
Off the hook... or rather fork

You don't give a d**n about the cat, it's your spirifer you're worried about.
I think this might be a single output storylet or maybe a matter of luck. I'm thinking you either lose the spirifer and gain some dark knowledge, or your spirifer is changed into a Raving Spirifer: He only whispers, mutters, and screams one thing: The Name. IDK though since I didn't create the starveling cat and I don't know the writers' intentions with it.

On the other hand, it's very clear from some of the uses for the Starveling Cat in SMEN that the kitty is up to its nose in Seeking. Your Opportunity Card idea certainly seems consistent with the writers' intentions for the Starveling Cat to me.
