The Dullest Individual in Fallen London

Diptych Administrator Posts: 3493 1/7/2014	The role of the Doctor and Notary professions in the last Sacksmas got me thinking - just how far could one progress with a character who never got involved in the schemes of the Bazaar, or, indeed, did anything adventurous or noteworthy at all? Who never fought spider-councils, or uncovered the secrets of the Correspondence, or did anything more exciting than carrying out their mundane professional duties, and exchanging a few words with the gossipy urchin on the corner? What storylines could they actually follow - and just how much Fate would they have to spend to become a Person of Some Importance? Handily, there's plenty of equipment that suits civilian purposes - suits and hats, canes and watches and glasses, landaus and city clubs. For instance, I'm imagining someone like... say... the Pabulous Physician. He came to Fallen London to take a post at St Nathaniel's, but was briefly inconvenienced by an awkward case involving mistaken identity, a traffic infraction and a runaway donkey. He wears a regular, un-menacing topper, a morning-suit, and some very shiny shoes. He lives in a well-appointed townhouse and lunches at the Parthenaeum, and his ambition is to grow even better sidewhiskers than Mr Pooter next door's. He prescribes tonics and regular exercise, and thinks that what London could really use more of is less bats. -- Sir Frederick, the Libertarian Esotericist. Lord Hubris, the Bloody Baron. colinsapherson Posts: 191 11/6/2015	I must say that my biggest regret this Hallowmas was not asking the good doctor for a confession. I can just imagine his guilty admission of the time he had a large glass of sherry before dinner (impropriety) or when he read the last page of a novel when only halfway through (curiosity) or the time he said "fiddlesticks!" when his bridge contract failed (violence). He blithely goes about his day as spies observe him (believing he possesses untold secrets), men emulate his fashion (as they see him as a social icon), and all other manner of events sway at his slightest movement without him ever being the wiser. -- Elene: Generally open for invitations. You know the sort. Karhumies Posts: 75 1/8/2014	As for tone: You could narrate everything in the "grumpy old man" voice and tone. "Back in the day we had none of this humbuggery." Something similar to Clint Eastwood in the early parts of the movie Gran Torino. As for format: I think a blog with occasional updates might work out the best, whenever the character runs across something he/she detests. I've had Taupe-Wainscot #13 half-finished for ages, but I've just been creatively bereft, worn out from full-time work and from waves hands vaguely life... things. People have been terribly kind, sending me prompts and such, and the doc's not even going to get back to London until the end of this update. I have hit a mild sort of snag - the doctor's Watchful is high enough to start drawing the first Recalling the Surface card - and it seems to be so common as to, in fact, have a 100% draw rate. I'm holding off on resigning him to Neathy life for now - not to mention that he's hardly the sort to have a storied history of secret knowledge and cunning crimes - but if they all exhibit this behaviour, then he'll need a five-card lodgings to be able to draw just one card. Oh well; I shall see what happens. I think the next episode shall involve continued investigations of death and devilry, and also some discoveries of animal oddities. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good name for his Bandaged Raven? (For that matter, does anyone have any suggestions for the doctor's own given name?
