Play a game of strategy with an exiled Princess, as she plots to reconquer her lost throne. Will you encourage her to bloody invasion? Or popular rebellion?
The Season of Sceptres has finished. If you played Trial and Error, The Stone Guest and The Sinking Synod, you will have gained an item unique to each tale. You can trade in these items to unlock a short tale suffused with lore and adorned with an alluring reward.
This option opens today, and will remain permanently, so there is no need to trade in your items by any deadline.
The story can be found via The Season of Sceptres: The Game is Afoot edited by Absintheuse on 11/3/2017

The descriptive writing here is beautiful. Superb. Sublime. I can see the board, its pieces, the threads between. The map, in a style not unlike Tolkien's, unfolds before me. I really do mean it; the mental imagery this story evokes is clear and cohesive. The Princess's description of the passage south to Vesture stood out especially. I've already played Flint, and so the names were familiar; that foreknowledge added a lot of depth to the game, and learning a bit about where the northern kingdoms all fit on a map has added a lot of life to that background knowledge from Flint. Maybe the Princess could be convinced to allow a copy of the board be made before her departure. The Dilmun Club would be very interested...
"Kingdoms of dust" (result text for confining the cousin to a fading palace) contained two typos. End of the first paragraph, "medicority". End of the second paragraph, "it's life ends".
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna queue up some epic metal, play through the game again to see the other choices, and then once more to make the proper RP decisions. Invading the Presbyterate is fun.
edit: I want these dice. Failbetter, consider making these dice.

Oh this was really nice. I really felt like I was planning some big military tactic, and I put lots of thought to every click, much moreso than in most turn-ins where, if I recall correctly, you're usually just a passive observer until a choice right at the end. Also, Vesture sounds magical, spiders are friends, and this has rekindled my old flame for the Elder Continent. Now excuse me, as I go prepare my armies to storm Nidah. FOR ETERNITY!

This season's stories aren't particularly exciting, but I'm always grateful for more details on the systems and bureaucracies of Fallen London, as it gives more foundation for fan content. And more Elder Continent stories!!!! Yay for Presbyterate content!! The possibility of my main later joining the Injurious Princess in retaking her land and then marrying her actually made me squeal in delight for a few seconds because it's like the stuff of fairytales >////////<
-- Main:
Sekar, a Rambunctious Socialist with an unhealthy inclination towards a particularly combustible language.
Other characters:
The Reluctant Oneironaut : Spends the better part of his days sleeping while his daughters study him in his dreaming-state. The Uproarious Mechanic : A new challenger to the drinking champions of the Blind Helmsman. The Eloquent Chromatomancer : Young enough to be an urchin, yet too clean to pass as one.

I am the sixteenth person to express interest in ExceptionallyDelicious's map of the story routes. Not counting anyone who may have requested via PM. It has been only three days, so far.
What reason is there to not share the link openly? It's not exactly a dump of Fate-locked story text, because mapping the choices and routes doesn't call for anything more detailed than their titles. If my detailed Tanah-Chook guide is any indication, discussing the mechanics of Fate-locked content is fine as long as we aren't tossing in all of FBG's writing as well.

Phenomenal wrap-up. This is honestly stellar. I've dumped two full candles into replaying and plan on doing more tomorrow. I have a doc where I've tried to connect how the choices affect each other and will be replaying until I've done every possible combination or have a result where everything goes right. Really just a bang-up job all around. I would very, very much like to see this doc! PM sent! Anyone else who would like one, please let me know and I'll be happy to send you a PM as well. Cheers.

Part of me loves how the game can go more or less disastrously and the Princess's response is to pack up with the mindset that it all looks good to her. Brilliant, just brilliant. And that's not even mentioning how you can just ask her for her hand in marriage. "Hey, wanna get married and take over a kingdom together?" "Haha yeah let's do it." Honestly, if someone proposed to me in a similar fashion, I don't know if I could say no either.
That being said, I do love the multiple choices of conquest we're given and the rare opportunity to go over strategy once more. It certainly makes it a time sink, but an enjoyable one well worth the actions. Well done, Failbetter! edited by Sir Joseph Marlen on 11/8/2017

I am not quite used to the the seasonal epilogue coming in so fast! I am pretty used to waiting for the conclusion after finishing the season, but I am not going to complain.

I liked the game and its mechanics, but couldn't bring myself to play another round as I was content with my first choices. Loved the art for the Injurious Princess. Enjoyed extra lore on the Presbyterate and its kingdoms. All in all had fun with this seasonal conclusion, though it felt lighter in content overall.

Oh, gosh, that was fun. Planning out campaigns; considering the political, military and diplomatic ramifications... I was also happy with my first result, and wish the Princess best of luck winning back the hearts and minds of her people.

I saw a mention of a Starstone Demark earlier in this thread, but anything else particularly interesting? The text for some of the endings mentions things like a "chariot" or "an estate". Those are all in-game rewards. And by that I don't mean in the Fallen London game, but in the game that the two characters are playing. They are rewards that the Princess tells you that you would gain in this hypothetical scenario.

So what I've been doing sort of has been a bit of a content dump, as I've been sending PM's with links to my journal entries as well as a few musings. Your comment inspired me to put together an poorly constructed document where I did my best to map the whole process. My google drive is being very finicky about sharing privileges at the moment, so I'll see if I can't figure that out. If not, I'll post a screenshot. Finally got around to playing it, and by Stone I absolutely loved it! Though the season itself was just fair for me, this was by far the best tie-in of any of them in my opinion. I thought the mechanics were excellent, an ingenious way of telling the story without actually have to play out the actual invasion (which would have been a disappointment given the very limited time in a seasonal tie-in) and the text was absolutely beautiful! Huge kudos to the writers for this one. It was a joy to play through. It had mysteries, exotic foreign culture, callbacks to previous stories, cunning stratagems, a story that varied lovingly depending on the choices underway, and I even got to (pretend) romance another vicious princess, she might not be the Captivating one, but it was far more than I had hoped for and I will take what I can get for now . edited by Akernis on 11/25/2017

Loved the writing. Shades of fairy tale and fantasy through a Victorian lens. The chance to replay also was a boon. I wish I was not in the middle of the Notability grind so I could enjoy it more... I did not realize how much time it could actually consume. I went for the benevolent bloodless option, and enjoyed the fact that for once, being a good person was rewarded too.

This was super enthralling! I really enjoyed planning a campaign and learning about the Presbyrate, especially the little details. Makes me excited to visit Presbyterate, although not to live there. The Injurious Princess wrote:
Here are the towers of Befari and Conei-Samanti, which watch for invasion from the north, and guard the woods for when the spiders try to flee our realm. Vesture does like its spiders, but not all spiders seem to enjoy being in Vesture.

I realize now we've never asked something, never considered it a question...where the heck do the humans of the Presbyterate even come from? Like were there humans before the first city fell, just chilling with Stone? How? Are they refugees of the First City?

Chiming in to say that while the stories of this season were a little hit-or-miss for me, I really enjoyed the wrap-up! Clear and satisfying options as part of an intriguing scenario, excellent text and descriptions of some really interesting kingdoms (it somewhat felt like going through a bloody travelogue, which was fun!), and having the option to go through the game multiple times was nice.
And I'll second/Nth wanting to know more about the history of the Presbyterate...

As for the end of season reward, I'm fairly certain a Starstone Demark is the only possibility, as the text surrounding it is unrelated to the game and wouldn't make sense to change according to a different ending: "She presses a gleaming stone into your hand before she boards"
