Delicious friends, the Exceptional Story for March is here!

Deep in the Clay Quarter, someone is experimenting with flesh and clay. By sawing limbs and swapping organs, they probe the boundaries of both substance and class. Will you seek out this scholar and his collection of ghastly subjects?
The Clay Man's Arm is the first story in the Season of Stones, and was written by Graham Robertson. This Season involves three linked stories delving into the hardships and injustices at the heart of London.
Players will be able begin each story from the Season of Stones card. At the end of the season, players who played all three will unlock bonus content allowing them to address - or profit from - London's inequity.
Editing and QA: Olivia Wood, James Chew, and Cash Decuir. Art by Paul Arendt.
EXCEPTIONAL FRIENDSHIP In addition to a new, substantial, stand-alone story every month, Exceptional Friends enjoy:
- Access to the House of Chimes: an exclusive private member's club on the Stolen River, packed with content
- An expanded opportunity deck: of ten cards instead of six!
- A second candle: Twice the actions! 40 at once!
Finishing all three stories in the Season of Stones will make you eligible for an additional opportunity, to follow.
If you want to keep an Exceptional Story beyond the month it’s for, you must complete the related storylet in the current Season’s card throughout London. This will save it for you to return to another time.

Overall I mostly enjoyed this ES. Mechanically, I thought it worked well, particularly the luck-based challenges in the first part when you're trying to get used to your new arm. This was to me the best part of the ES. The case investigations also worked well, as did the exploration of the creepy laboratory and the rumblings of discontent in the Clay Quarter. The inclusion of the Comtessa and the Clay Man story was a nice touch, as were the (I assume intentional) allusions to the 'going sharp' storylets in Anthe from Zubmariner.
My only real disappointment was that one of the two main choices in this ES was too vague and too limited in options. I wanted to end the doctor's horrific experiments, but I prevented the Theseusan from taking his revenge. I incorrectly assumed that I'd need the Scholar's help to switch the arms back, or at the very least that I'd be able to deal with the Scholar myself via persuasion or violence, but instead the ES seems to have interpreted that as 'let the Scholar go and continue his work'...which wasn't what I'd intended. It would be nice to have more ways of dealing with challenges at the climax of an ES, rather than a single, vague binary choice.
Oh, well. At least I can pretend that the other Clay Men dealt with him.

Overall, I liked it. Thematically, it worked well with the implications of transgressing the Great Chain through a kind of piecemeal effort. I appreciated the reference to the Comtessa's story as well.
I'm going to say this about ES's in general though, their lack of mechanics is really getting a little old. I understand you've got to write for an audience with a variety of character stats, but if the solution to that is just another story of clicking through 5 dialog options to move to the next set of 5 dialog options, it's kind of boring. I understand that these are stories, ultimately, but if I just wanted to click through and read, I'd buy a book. I play Fallen London because I like narrative games, and these premium stories are heavy on narrative, light on gameplay. It's surprising because many Fate stories have a good blend of both. Is it the time crunch aspect in development? If the ES model necessitates gameplay light stories, it gets a little hard to justify the cost. I mean, I like them, they break up the end game grind, but they are pretty shallow.
To be more constructive, I feel like stories like 12:15 from Moloch St and the one about the play from last season handled this reasonably well, while the Gate Prophet and this current one were pretty weak in that regard.

This isn't so much a comment about the ES as it is a comment about the season, but boy howdy am I looking forward to the remainder of this season. As one involved somewhat...intimately with the Revolutionary cause, I enjoyed the Season of Revolutions...but another Seasonal rotation dealing with injustice and the transgression/upholding of boundaries? And then the 1895 election soon to come after that? Hoo-boy, things are going to get interesting. Hotshot won't be content with only the elites going to the Wilderness after all...
Now, with this particular story:
I thought it was decent and slightly informative if a little direct and with few options overall - a bit like the Clay Men themselves I suspect. As a whole though it's not quite...uh, well, what I expected or really hoped for from an ES with this premise. Not enough interaction with the Theseusian Clay Man or going into the implications of his name/your situation for one: the Theseus Paradox and the question of whether your 'self' in Fallen London is determined by your body, your mind, your soul, or something...else is really fascinating but the in-story elements I felt were too subtle or nonpresent to register. Ditto with the whole 'Clay Man beginning to self-liberate' premise. The perception I got through it was a focus on mild body horror more than philosophical questions of the self and the body OR sociopolitical questions of challenging one's position in the status quo and the nascent difficulties of organizing resistance.
The beginning situation with the room and your experiences with the clay arm were nicely done, and I wished more checks like those would have been done in the story. I have never experienced the replacement of a limb (or other part of my body), but from my limited position it seems like an honest attempt to portray the feeling of having a replacement body part: difficulty, awkwardness, thinking differently about formerly routine actions, even describing the act of covering up so that no one will know you are marked in such a way. Sharing more of that experience with your actions during the story and/or with the Theseusian Clay Man's experience would have been interesting. Just two people, sharing each other's limbs, making (very) small talk with each other.
We don't need or should expect stories from every personality we meet, but certainly it would have been interesting to know more about the Clay Doctor (was that the title? IDK), especially in the context of the whole 'ship of theseus' thing: I have to admit I was waiting for him to be a a person that succeeded in full-clay transmutation. As is, we don't know that much about him other than doctor doing some weird stuff with clay and flesh, to people unwilling to volunteer themselves. And either way, he ends up likely smashed to pieces. No saving him the same way we could save the Mechanic in December's ES, huh?
The Clay Men uprising and organizing and figuring out how to resist under the constraints of their own ideological(-metaphysical?) belief sets would have been so cool to explore and I'm not knocking this story for not covering that but...I'm slightly knocking this story for not covering that. We got there a bit with the Earthy Proselytizing and a few snippets here and there but not enough. Will their rumbles of dissent only foment quietly in the background? Can we do nothing to show our support/opposition when the flashpoint eventually sparks and there's blood in the streets and stories?
edited by Hotshot Blackburn on 2/23/2017

And-done. To make a long story short-a literally slow start, but a most satisfying skin-crawling climax.
I can't help but feel the choice was no choice at all-of COURSE I want my (literally) bloody arm back! It's mine! It has nostalgic value! My companion may be a grim sod, but I've only the word of a madman that this one won't end with me turning to clay too! And I can hardly fulfill my destiny as a space bat by lugging around this unaerodynamic dead weight can I? And yet, RIGHT at the end I ALMOST regret everything on seeing the serpent on the path not taken. With the scholar's test subjects dispersed into the streets of London, I doubt we'll be experiencing any invasions from across the mirror any time soon.
At this rate, I'm not feeling kindly disposed to these plebian uprisings. At. All.
I'll take great satisfaction in doing my level best to stomp them back into the filth they came from.

I really enjoyed reading this story as I played it. The random chance actions at the start were not my favorite (I failed my first 5 attempts in a row), but I can understand them in this setting. (As an aside, has anyone ever considered allowing us to use the devilbone dice to reroll random chance actions? I have also failed 5 attempts on the Mercies in a row, which is very disheartening!)
My one suggestion for future stories of this sort - why not allow me the player to select whether the bad thing happened to me or to one of my companions? My character has never died in FL and I am really careful with her. So having this happen to her off screen is not a wonderful choice.
Still, even with that, I enjoyed the topic and the writing!

I was under the impression that the Scholar is left alive, albeit rather damaged, with his leg flattened and stolen teeth knocked out. But there's no real mention of the scholar after you attack him... I can't help but feel that this ambiguity is deliberate, but why? Did the writers want to leave the Scholar's fate to your imagination? Or do they plan on bringing him back as a recurring villain and so let him escape the fate he so richly deserved (if he lived I presume it's because the Theseusian disapproved of finishing the job for whatever inscrutable reason)? I'm genuinely puzzled.

I'm somewhat disappointed with this story. It wasn't bad, as such, it was just a bit too straightforward for my tastes. I suspect those who would be more inclined to keep a clay arm might get more out of it, but as it is, Sam's character made the few choices non-choices in the end.
I promised the Theseusian to swap back the arms, let him assault the Scholar, and kept my promise. As I learned from previous posts, not letting him at the Scholar means that I would have let the experiments continue? That's not really a straightforward consequence, I think.
For a story with so few choices, it could have used clearer framing for them. For the positive things, I really enjoyed the start of the story, and exploring the lab. I got lucky with all morning preparation options on the first go, so I am one of those who laments missing out on the failure texts On the other hand, I understand those who feel their character concept was violated with such a starting point, especially as there was no way of getting out of it once started. Of course, we are never told how it actually happened, so everyone's free to make up a backstory, like being kidnapped by clay men, drugged at a pub, etc. Part of the horror premise is, after all, not being willing subjects to it.
In conclusion, the writing was fine, the dynamics were not the best, but the main failing of the ES is that it came after the Season of Skies, so far my favourite season. edited by SamNorrey on 2/28/2017

Well you can't just get rid of parliament. They are around as mostly decorations, like the Senate after Rome was ruled by Emperors. Getting rid of them would just upset people, might as well give them something small to do in order to keep them out of the way. Meanwhile the functionaries can do the real work of keeping London moving.

I rather enjoyed this story
I will admit, I was sceptical on whether to renew my EF. It was only when I noticed I'd not seen this writer before, I decided to chance things to see how they'd go . . . I'm rather glad I took the chance.
The mechanics I thought we interesting; it felt like they actually reflected the story in question, so that the luck challenges felt like they matched getting used to a new arm, while the investigating a case matched trying to uncover answers . . . it's great to see the gameplay and story gel so seamlessly, especially as it adds to the immersion of the story itself.
It was also very clear what needed to be done; aside from the glitch, which FBG more than generously amended, it was perfectly clear what to do and where to go and when the story ended . . . I felt no confusion, as well as no frustration, and I enjoyed going through the various stages.
The story was good, too; it was a little linear in the sense that I didn't feel I had much to explore, as in there was a lot of different things to see (which were fascinating and added a lot to the story itself), but I felt I was a little forced into set actions and with little room for deviation. The only choice that felt meaningful was whether to keep the arm or take it . . .
I would absolutely love to see what keeping the arm does; sadly, my character isn't the sort to keep it, but the story was quite good, so I'm tempted to maybe replay on my alt account. I wouldn't say it's my favourite story, but I did enjoy it a lot and I felt quite attached to the characters. Even the side-characters provided a lot of lore and were very sympathetic.
Anyway, very good work and very enjoyable

Ohmygoodness. I've enjoyed all of the exceptional stories that I've been able to play--some more than others, some with more confusion with others. This is the first one where I'm just...kind of freaking out about it. One of the things I'm enjoying so far in the Season of Stones is that I don't feel like there's lore that I'm missing. In the Season of Wrecks, there were a lot of bits of lore that I'd encountered, but not enough to really understand the minutiae of the stories. I still enjoyed them, but it was a bit frustrating at times. Season of Skies was less frustrating on that end, because it was opening up a whole new part of Fallen London.
The Clay Man's Arm just...well, I did my version of bingeing this story. I needed it all, right now. Part of it might be the theme of this season...the groups on the fringes of Fallen London rising up and demanding to be heard. There's something very topical about this, which I appreciate, and I'm really looking forward to interacting with the other groups in the coming months. So basically, even if the story had been kind of "meh" the whole idea of it would have had me hooked. I also loved that our introduction to this story was "do you side with the politician or the reporter, or do you continue talking with the cat?". Backing up the journalist and shaking down a politician was very cathartic for me.
The writing is just...I'm trying not to flail. Again, it might be a combination of the writing and the theme, with the fact that we're delving into the lives of the Clay Men, but this story feels so traditionally gothic. If Mary Shelley wrote for Failbetter, this is the story she would have written. There's just so much here! A scholar? A cult? What does it mean to be Clay? We(I?) tend to see the Clay Men as living undesirable lives, but the way they treat the flesh is fascinating!
Not to mention, Ginny Jenny operates on a philosophy best summed up as "okay, but why?" Having an option that said, "your curiosity won't be satisfied if you pick the other thing!!!" was kind of perfect for her. I'll admit I debated the final choice, but
getting the Scholar's notes and having the opportunity to perform a surgery she is in no way qualified to perform just for funzies
won out in the end. I'm glad I chose it; it felt very in line with the whole Frankenstein feel.
All-in-all, I felt like this was a great story. there was a lot going on but it didn't feel scattered; I enjoyed the cult vs. mysticism, Clay Men having existential crises, a Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier vibe...though that might just be my Marvel Nerd showing through. edited by ginnyjenny on 3/15/2017

Did anyone glean the significance of the reference to Theseus in this story? Why was the "Theseusian" called that? We don't really learn much about the character other than that he's mad about the arm swap and wants his own back. The nearest I can think is that a couple of Theseus's six Labours have to do with bodily distortion. I assumed the reference was to the paradox of the Ship of Theseus. He is replacing each part of his body in turn, and trying to become something fundamentally different as a result, while still also himself.

Many people seem not to like this story very much, but I have to say my only real gripe with it was a lack of emotional responses to choose from for our characters upon waking up with a clay arm. Like, I would've loved to spend some actions on panicking and general OMG-WTF-IS-HAPPENING-histrionics instead of going straight into cool detective mode.

Another very late post:
I liked the story! The lore about Clay men was very interesting, and I do kind of wish we would have found out more about the subject's resocialization among their peers.
I could not out of good conscience keep the clay arm, but I'm glad I had the option to. This was a very interesting story, well done
The only negative I found was the forced-entry in the beginning. As evidence by the time gap, I was planning to save my Stories for much, much later and I couldn't and that was a little upsetting. Other than that, it was great!

For those of you arm-thieves feeling guilty, I'll say that
it seems to me that your ally in the story is going to be unhappy no matter what you do. I didn't particularly enjoy the story, but at least I am happy to say that it was due to personal differences with the subject rather than the actual lack of quality of the story. I thought it was an interesting idea we hadn't seen much off before, and provided some good insight, and the writing was on par as usual, (though the case felt like a action-sink that I could have been without.) That said, I really don't like body horror, and it will probably be one of the few stories I don't include in my personal continuity. So, not a hit on my list, though I don't really feel it affects the balance of quality much as all three ES of the previous season landed on my top-six list of Fate stories in the game, and am so stoked for the tie-in finale. edited by Akernis on 2/24/2017

There is not a spoiler zone. And spoiler tags don't appear on all devices, but you did it right.

Did anyone tackle the Parliamentarian with Mr. Huffman? Or help him escape? I kept talking to the cat.

I really loved this story! I kept it (the echo of the epilogue is journaled) and I must say, the dangerous increase was much less than expected.

It is always deeply disappointing when I fail to be able to echo part of a story (or in this case even READ part of the story) because my internet isn't very solid and the page doesn't load.

I'm in two minds about this story . . .
On the one hand, the writing is good; it's not quite in a style I'm typically prefer, but it's well written and the concept is very interesting, and I am enjoying each piece of the story as it unfolds.
That being said, I'm confused about the mechanics? I feel it seems very simple on the face, but I'm at 72-ish case notes, but with no sign of being able to close the case . . . I've spent two Darkdrop Coffees, a crap-load of items, but 72 is waaaaay higher than I've ever had to get cases in the past. I forget the exact number I need, but there's nowhere around to remind me what number I need to get.
That being said, I did dislike the luck checks at the start, too, but it was nothing major and nothing that stopped me from enjoying the story; it also made sense, as - with a new arm - things would rely on luck. Narratively, it worked well.
I just wish I knew what I was doing with this case :-S
I'm up to 84 Detective's Progress with no sign of progress, am I doing something wrong? Update: 40 actions and 20 Fate for a total of 120 Detective's Progress, and I still got nothing. Update 2: ...I feel irrationally sad that I apparently needed FIVE Detective's Progress to clear it ;_; edited by Hattington on 2/23/2017 edited by Hattington on 2/23/2017

For some reason I only seem to be able to echo the "Find out what's happening in your city" results about the Urchins. The other results display just fine in the browser but trying to echo them just brings up the Urchins result.
Also, in the initial getting-ready event it's possible to raise Morning Tasks to 4, locking the other options even if you still want to get failure results.
Unlike the other leads in the case, A Lead: Injured, or Broken doesn't have a unique message when gained, and there's a missing word in the message for investigating it. There's also no message for losing A Lead: Unrest and Agitation.
It's possible to ask the Theseusian who did the surgery multiple times. edited by Optimatum on 2/23/2017

Yeah...keeping the arm actually made me feel bad. Wow
Like bad enough to consider resetting the story when available.
Also, I seem to have two clay arms. Am I just symmetrical? Did I steal one on my way out? Did I not need to steal one?

I like the story, but if there is one thing I can complain about it is that my character had their Arm removed without any warning from the game. I've been extremely careful not to die or suffer grievous injury in Fallen London under the pretense of exiting back out into a sun filled world at some point. Now if I left my arm will fall off.
Oh I mean given how long my character has been in the neath they'd probably just turn into paste if they walked into the light of a judgement, but before it wouldn't be because of wounds sustained.

I was unsure about it going in, but I'd say I enjoyed the story, very linear but it was interesting. I ended up keeping the clay arm but damn do I feel guilty, one of the few times I've regretted the kind of person my character has become.

On a related note, as a classicist, I found the term "Theseusian" incredibly grating. The correctly formed adjective for "Theseus" is "Thesean". I mean, FBG are a smart lot, so I consoled myself with the thought that they might have done this on purpose: as the Theseusian is a tortured amalgam of flesh and clay, so too is his appellation a tortured amalgam of Greek name with incorrectly applied Anglicized Latinate suffix. Still felt like nails on a chalkboard every time I read it, though!

For myself, I disliked the mechanics at the beginning -- being flung into a fairly lengthy process all of a sudden and having to do a chunk of a story I preferred to do, and to complete, in my own time. Having said that, I like the Clay Men as such, so I enjoyed finding out more about them, This was by no means my least favourite or indeed the most unappetising ES we've had in the last year.

He is replacing each part of his body in turn, and trying to become something fundamentally different as a result, while still also himself.
Ah, of course, that makes good sense! Nice pull.
