I'm currently at SMEN 16 and have a calling card. Should I go to the Winking Isle and grind up SMEN there, or keep working on it in London? My main concern is that going to the Isle will require me to dump a bunch of resources including two elemental secrets, which will be useful for making candles.

You need SMEN 21 in order to gain SMEN on the isle, but you will need to go there eventually.

If you still have wealth left, it might be worth it to sell them all to buy Cryptic Clues to convert to Appalling Secrets for drowning.

I don't recommend doing Winking before attaining Cerise, or Destin even (assuming you are going for Notability route) - you need a good amount of resources for Arthur (7x Searing Enigma), Beau (3300x Moon Pearls and 150x Memories of Light at minimum), and even for Cerise you'd still need material goods unless you have a daughter or a noman to sacrifice.

Destin requires SMEN 35 for the Notability method, so you can't get there without visiting the island.

I'd definitely get Arthur before you go to winking isle. Gaining SMEN and getting Arthur both unlock at SMEN 21, so there's no point in putting it off.
I personally haven't been there yet, but what I plan on doing is getting Arthur, selling enough to get just the initial preparations over with, then meditate to get up to SMEN 29, at which point I'll return and manufacture a new calling card.
As far as Beau and Cerise go, it doesn't look like you actually have to sell the materials needed for getting them to go through the preparations. I didn't see memories of light, moon pearls, or a classic short story (what I'm using for Cerise's) listed as something I can't have. I can even hang on to my searing enigmas, since I don't plan on going to the sun beneath the sea, at least not on this trip.

I have a daughter, an overgoat and a classic short story, so there's no shortage of things to sacrifice.

What is the non-Notability route for Destin?

You can get Destin by choosing the Torment destiny, but that can only happen during a festival (and not all festivals, I believe). It'll be a while before that's possible. The notability route is a pain (those last two points of notability take a lot of work), but you can do it at any time of year.

  • Also: you don't need to manufacture a new calling card. Once you have one, you can use it as many times as necessary.

I know I don't need a new calling card; I just wanted to get another one floating around to make it easier for other seekers. In getting my 7 enigmas for Arthur, I ended up with 11, so I figured I would get the next 3 so I can make another card.

You could also get Destin's at Hallowmas this year via a social action. Iirc it required that the sender have all seven confessions, Cerise, no Destin, and SMEN 35(?). The recipient needed only SMEN 3 and no Destin. This could of course be different next Hallowmas.
