I've been waiting for the Opportunity card that lets me become a Doctor, but it's not shown up. Am I waiting for something that doesn't exist?
Do I need, instead, to obtain a Favourable Circumstance at my Lodgings and then use that to obtain an Unsigned Letter?
The latter will use up 7 Notability. Do I need Notability for anything Christmas related?

It won't show on the card if you still have a profession. Is that the case?

No, I dumped my profession weeks ago when I decided to be a Doctor for Sacksmas.

We are talking about the "An unsigned letter", right? That is where it should appear. And you need to have no profession (make sure by going to your lodging, choosing the "Write letters" and see if the option to "Choose a new profession" is unavailable, meaning you really do not have a profession).
Have at least 3 Notability and 150 Watchful. After all of these requirements - do you still don't see the option on the An unsigned letter?

I don't know the name of it because I'm not sure what it is. Is it an Opportunity Card (which is drawn from a the pile of cards) or is it a Storylet (which is listed on the page below the pile of cards, one of the many choices available in a given area)?
In the Write Letters storylet, Choose a Profession is locked. This indicates I don't have a profession currently. The Await an Unsigned Letter storylet is locked because I don't have a Favorable Circumstance. I don't have a Favorable Circumstance because my Notability is only 6.
However, I thought that I could become a Doctor by using an Opportunity Card (not the storylet in the Lodgings). Is this not true?
Are there two ways to become a Doctor? (one via Opportunity Card and one via Storylet?) edited by StarryWisdom on 12/28/2015 edited by StarryWisdom on 12/28/2015

I see. You must draw the An Unsigned Letter card and click the option to become a doctor there. Either draw it by chance or have it using the Favourable Circumstances (which, you say, you don't have). Drawing the card is quite infrequent (wiki says half as common as a standard card). No other way. (Well, you could pay Fate to have the Circumstances now. Does it worth it? you are doing this to get 1 ToL from Mr. Sacks cards, right?)

Yes, I want it to get the 1 ToL from Mr Sacks.
And you're confirming that the Unsigned Letter can be acquired either via random Opportunity Card draw or via the storylet in the Write Letters section of the Lodgings, which requires a Fav. Circumstance. Thanks for that. I'll continue to draw the cards, since I am not sure I can achieve the MW required in time.

Wow, what timing. I just got the card today, and now I'm a doctor. Interesting that the card requires just 5 Notability, while the storylet requires 7 (to get the Favorable Circumstance).

Odd. According to the wiki, Doctor and Notary only require 3 Notability. The card is a random draw, you pay the extra Notability for being impatient.

Congratulations! Glad it worked out. 5 notability? Wiki says 3.. Though I also remember 5.
Now you only need to choose a specialty and go treat those fallen londoners. A few suggestions: ** Marsh doctor (like a country doctor, only.. you know). ** Rubbery specialist. you will be exposed to the field of
GENETICS!
Not familiar with that concept? Well, SCIENCE then. Don't worry. You'll get there. ** Surgeon, a skillful knife user like Jack, only accepted by the law and earns payment. Plus, rarely anyone dies at your table. ** Psychiatrist. Compete with famous Dr. Shlomo and perhaps find a cure for Irrigo's amnesia. Be the Royal Beth's house doctor. ** The royal physician, at court. I hear they have some strange patients to visit. ** The council's doctor. Not everyone needs to know you have ties with the revolutioners, of course. They do have some uses for a doctor, you can imagine. ** Open your own orphanage and experiment! Oh my. My my my. Science, we said, right? ** A zee doctor. Every vessel needs one. All the Zzzoup one can stomach. I'm kidding. Often no zoup and much hunger. ** A specialty in Snuffers. Oh. You can't say that out loud. But they do have the most intriguing anatomy. ** A boring physician. A most boring one. http://www.frillyshirt.org/category/taupe-wainscot/ (By Sir Frederick Tanah-Chook) ** A wolfsdock physician. A visit worth 50 rustygolds for only 1cp reduction. There are thousands of players in FL. Imagine the income!!! ** A cook. Yea. There are plenty of meals and feasts which lowers wounds by 3 cp and more. (e.g. a dinner gong at Polite Invitation, Dante's Grill, Spore-Toffee, Refreshments at first coil of the labyrinth, feast at university, A Magnificent Feast, a feast on a Fate locked story on Trade of Souls, a restorative, at least two options at Mutton Island...) A cook is the best physician in the Neath, apparently. ** An animancer. The field of examining and mending souls.
And the last and best field there is - an anesthesiologist! Best of luck, delicious colleague. edited by Gonen on 12/28/2015

Just so you all know, when you raise Notability, you often draw the "Unsigned Message" card much faster. Best to keep it banked until ready.

Interesting about the 5 Notability requirement. Did you happen to notice whether the Notary option also required 5 Notability and not 3?
I'll update the wiki...

I only needed 3 notability to become a doctor when I used the unsigned letter just last week (9 days ago). Unless FBG changed it while on holiday, I'm doubtful of the 5 notability requirement. Can someone confirm? I wouldn't want to have the wiki changed based on unverified information.

I always thought that was a placebo effect- you know, how in a large set of samples, there'll be smaller ones that imply all kinds of patterns and will legitimately fool others. the card is something like 1 in 100 or rarer, after all.
On the other hand, it is possible they added another unsigned message card to the deck with a notability requirement. not likely, really, but possible.
doctor required 3 notability for me, but idk what the others needed. edited by Grenem on 12/29/2015

I do remember the 5. I was prepared to lose 5 points by raising my Notability to 6 and was gladly surprised to see that it does not lower it. That it why I remember it vividly. Had turned to a doctor before NiteBrite did so no change on the holiday. Though perhaps I quite have it wrong. Terribly, horribly wrong. When I'll have the card again, and resign from that profession, I'll make another check. edited by Gonen on 12/29/2015

Ah! Beat me to it. I have an Unsigned Message waiting for the moment after Day 11 to test that. 3 then! Memory is a cheating ally. EDIT: Right. Can conform Nigel & Nitebrite were right. 3 Notability for the Doctor/Notary. Sorry for feeding disinformation. edited by Gonen on 1/4/2016
