EXCEPTIONAL STORY: FLINT PART II, WINE OR WOUND Messages in this topic - RSS

'The Old Hound waits in her stall, forelimbs folded, eyes deep and sad. Strings of glass jewels glimmer and clash. A flower-scent rises from the incense tripod. "Best," she groans. "Best wares."'

'Someone has despoiled the stump of a granary with graffiti. "KHANATE SWINE", they have daubed on the wall. "HORSE LUMPERS" "SHIP CROWS" "FOX BITERS" "ARSE-FISH". Many of the sentiments are obscure, but few seem positive, and there is definitely a zoological theme.'

'The surface of a mirror-dark pool trembles. The shadows beneath the trees bend and quiver. The forest shakes. Blood drips from the branches. Salamanders slink hissing from the grass. Tiger-heads break the pool's surface. "War," a voice cries. "War!"'

We're opening the Elder Continent to visitors for the first time. See the story-haunted port of Apis Meet. Visit the hundred-tongued city of Caution. Mount an expedition into the Bleeding Forest, where bee-stings kill with melancholy; and discover whether the pretender-god called the Thief-of-Faces still lies bound in its Prison of Flint...

Flint is a special Christmas treat: a two-part Truly Exceptional Story. Part I opened in October, and Part II is live now. It's the single largest piece of content ever released in Fallen London, and it may be the last bit of FL content I write - Paul now refuses to leave me alone in a room with a keyboard, since I have proven completely incapable of staying within content budget.

Subscribing to Exceptional Friendship will give you access to Parts I and II. Subscribers had early access to the first part of the story in November. If you've been supporting us since November, thank you very much! We hope you've enjoyed it.

We'll also be offering immediate access to the story for the higher price of 120 Fate, for people who really want to play the story but for some reason don't want to subscribe.

Well, I decided not to wait for the typical 3H 20M (actually 6 40 with Exceptional Friendship) turn refill and get enough to just finish the story. I was not disappointed. The story was masterfully done, and brought up questions such as who deserved forgiveness, who deserved a second chance, and what risks would one take, or would one even do what they typically do as done before; especially considering if one wanted to break the cycle of mistakes?

(Looks like I better slip that old spoiler tag on)
In the end, I did take the risky path option on the story, but I played a "prudent" option as my character was apt to do. Then again, about 40% of the way through the second part, I realized if he kept doing what he always did, nothing would change. Egged on by that thought, he risked the "optimistic" path. That option as well as the heroics in the first chapter which now allowed the scarred one to become the "Woman in Yellow" of whom became the new Deputy (Sorry about that, Showman.) I asked her to keep hope alive and try to "look forward." Little did I know how useful that would be later.
I decided to stock up with as many supplies as possible, and even spent three days in Caution exploring multiple stories. When I had to make my journey to Flint, the journey South was easy due to my current stats and stocked options all being filled. (I'm glad practicality was there for that first 40% however it seems.) My choices I mentioned earlier allowed me to convince her not to become...stone topiary. She stayed with me and not as a "prisoner."

I spent time talking to the "revived statues" and found the snippets of the different time and cultures a delight. I then met my nemesis (not Nemesis, that's a whole other Ambition story....) from the last part of the story and Parlayed. I decided to work with her, thinking I did not know all the story and got the tablet back as part of the deal. She went her way and I mine (I am sick of Betrayal as a former player of the Game so I kept my word as well as not doing stupid things "because they are there" so no drinking of the Wound.)

When I returned, I parted with the Woman in Yellow, my Deputy, and her Favour increased. I was honest about my actions to the "Bishop" so I decided to refuse Absolution (no reward or punishment for such, and anyway I really didn't have the right Quirts I wanted to boost,) I asked to explain the Thief of faces to me and finally understood what fueled true Hatred (double bonus, my Main did not have that Dread Surmise; now he does.)
Having Apis Peak is just an awesome bonus now the story is ended. Rarely do I want to take a ship ride just to play around with the stories; this is that notable exception (oh fine, the items are great that I can get from Caution also.)
And my character was changed in Spirit, but not in any way permanently or so it seems. (Those Stained however, may have a chance at Redemption...should they dare.)
(I tried to Echo as much of this story as I could to my journal (it is in the truthseeker's link in my sig; feel free to read it with my blessing.)
Overall, the intricacy and detail to the little things we had in the story was masterful. Things seen or referenced introduced years back now made a reappearance, as well as the more recent Sunless Sea references (as well as some of the "Swag" which even if it never is used, was cool just to have on the FL end.) The Pathos and Ethos was notably moving and when you question "why do they do what they do" and get such a prolific answer, that alone makes this worth the cost of the story. Then throw in the "moral choices" you have to choose between "your goal or another life" and it's all icing on the literary cake. (And having that new zailing destination spot is great) "Lost in Reflections" was my favourite story, because this now is, hands down. I only regret it is over....that and I can't permanently join the Menagerie Circus.

Alexis, I hope they allow you another foray into the darkly-lit room with enough Darkdrop Coffee to write like this again one day, but if this Opus required you to "take a Room at the Royal Bethlehem" and retired you in this kind of work (or seriously, you actually are retiring from writing FL in this manner,) then it was one H**l of a Swan Song....if the Swan was infused with Red Honey and Laudanum.

Bravo Sir, bravo!

What did the Delicious Administrator mean by "and it may be the last bit of FL content I write - Paul now refuses to leave me alone in a room with a keyboard, since I have proven completely incapable of staying within content budget." ? I am not sure if this is a joke or not.

I'm really sad I can't visit Caution or go on an expedition anymore. Those locations were the most fun, and I've enjoyed the opportunity cards greatly.

I think they would work very well as permanent locations, like Adam's Way. Would it be too much to ask?

I liked the story but I still feel there's lots of little things I've missed that I'd like to check out or revisit.

I'm a little concerned, all this talk about how good the writing was and not one mention of the lovely art? I'd love to have some of those thumbnails from Caution, are they in Sunless Sea? I haven't encountered those yet.

    Absolutely well done.

I don't know what does this say about me, but I found Flint kinda cheerful and optimistic, even more than Polythreme? Like, come on, you have a friendly city of talking animals, fat scowling lady with a cute handbag, the Bishop is giving a TED talk, and the only one who can potentially do bad things is the player.

Almost forgot the Delightful Adventuress though, such a jerk. I am not taking back what I said, though.

    "Face Off"

When you think about it, Nicolas Cage's movies are all pretty suspicious.

Face/Off: Nic Cage took someone else's face... off.
The Wicker Man: Nic Cage got locked in a cage and swarmed by bees so that the inhabitants of a certain island could get their honey.
National Treasure: Book of Secrets: Nic Cage created a scandal at the British Royal Palace in order to obtain a Memento of Passion.
Con Air: Nic Cage expressed his distaste for a mistreated animal-in-a-box.

Surely there's something he wishes to tell us all.

I'll post it here so people won't have to ask for PMs every time, so beware, spoilers about risky choices with The Wound!
You die (8 Wounds), gain 2 levels of Nightmare, gain 5 levels of Dangerous, and.. lose 40 levels of Persuasive. At least I went 200->160.
Oh, also. This was the best experience I've ever had in Fallen London. I just loved this story with every gram of mass in my body. If I could marry it I would. In fact I think I will!

The Bleeding Forest is definitely awesome. I stayed in there long enough to do the Huz mini-quest twice to see both options. I'm also glad that I got 10 of each item only found in Caution. They don't have a use, but souvenirs are nice all their own.

Presumably at some point there may be a story that requires a higher level of Intoxicating -- say 6, at which point you'd need a rather expensive item. Intoxicating is nice because it means "just have some kind of wines item" at a low level like the one needed for Flint, but that's not the only use; the new qualities-of-items seems like a system that they're going to use for quite a few things.

The easiest way to think of these "select an item with a quality" storylets is that they add an "this OR that" requirement into Fallen London without needing to have a ton of identical branches. Before Intoxicating, every time you woke a statue you'd have to have 12 different branches on the storylet, called "Pour the statue a sip of Greyfields 1879" and "Pour the statue a sip of Greyfields 1882" and "Pour the statue a sip of Morelways 1872" and so on and so forth. It's a shortcut to avoid that tedium, but also allow flexibility, so you don't locked out of options while far away from the Bazaar, as would've been common if it only accepted 1879.

Flint can be very glassy, but either way, I want a shard.

It seemed to do okay when I took it there. Perhaps the nearness to the Mountain helped. Apparently I wasn't the only one who took their Noman exploring this year. Now we just need Failbetter to write special content for the three people who did it. That seems like a good use of their time.

Sorry for reviving this thread again... I'm just about to set off to Flint and would like to know what sort of supplies to bring. I understand that a supply of presbyterate passphrases will come in handy. Anything aside from that?

Also, are there any areas that I should pay attention to if I wish to complete all sections? Was there something about a forest that one can't go back to?

Don't worry about using the old thread. Most people don't mind and it can be the most appropriate thing to do (as in this instance).
The following resources will make your life easier/more options available: passphrases, various third-tier items (MoEC, ToT, ZZ, etc) proscribed materials, cheap wine items. Most of these you only need a few of but you may want to have a safer supply of PP and MoEC. You'll also find it helpful to have higher Subtle and Melancholy.

The forest is called the Bleeding Forest and, indeed, make sure you've done as much there as you can. It's not a resource grind but lots of lore-ish snippets. Apart from that make sure you fully explore the end-story area before leaving.

Just finished Flint. A completely wonderful story and more than justifies having gotten Exceptional Friendship just to see it.

    Two minor items:
1. I was disappointed we weren't allowed to grab a piece of the Flint Prison. The flavor text said there were a ton of shards from it scattered in the grass. I'd definitely have picked one up just as a memento.

    2. I took Alan, my noman, on my expedition with me. But there were no options to make him into a statue or extend his life. What happened there? (I'm just kidding, I never expected this to be part of the content - but I have been wondering if the Elder Continent would help nomen.)

I think it's a testament to the compelling writing in this story that despite hating this particular result of my choices, I don't want to negate them.

I haven't touched the Bishop's Offer just so I can stain my soul a total of 14 times when Seeking comes back.

What else am I to do with all these Starveling Cats?

Hey everyone, this is my first post to the forum. I don't know if anybody can help me at all but I'm really upset and I thought I would try seeing if anyone here has any ideas before I send a tear-filled email to the Failbetter team.

I just finished Flint. And on the very last Storylet, asking the Bishop for absolution, when I made my choice, my Internet connection went out for a little bit. That page was stuck in a "loading" loop. I tried visiting some other websites in different tabs and nothing was loading. I disconnected and reconnected to the Internet, and now I can load other pages... but the Fallen London tab never displayed the result of that final storylet. When it finished loading, it showed the normal header and sidebar of the Fallen London site, but the middle section, where the storylet and the options and everything are, was completely blank. Opening a new tab and loading Fallen London, it loads correctly... but talking to the Bishop is not available. I've already done that and completed the story so it's not an option anymore. I just never got to read the results of that last storylet.

I really want to read that final piece of Flint. I understand why there's a prohibition against posting fate-locked content. But I'm left pretty stuck. I have no idea how I could possibly regain that storylet and experience the conclusion.

Does anybody have any idea of how I might fix this? A way to read something you've done but weren't able to record in your journal? Any method at all to see what I missed? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I haven't completed Flint myself but you should be able to find someone who echoed the conversation with the Bishop. Just look back in this thread for someone who chose the same ending as you and see if they echoed it or maybe someone can PM you the text.

No Calling Cards or boxed cats please. Will take dupes on the affluent photographers. Other social invitations welcome. Parabolan Kittens usually available, send me an in-game social action saying you want one and I will get one to you as soon as possible.

"You unlocked this with Elder Expedition's Progress 334 (you needed 50)". This is how long it took me to wring every last drop of content out of the Bleeding Forest. Actually, no; all the challenges were straightforward for me, so the only failure text I saw came from luck checks (of which I think there was only one). On the other hand, I got to stay as long as I wished without any adverse effects, which helped me explore to the fullest the rich buffet of available options. With so much content on offer, my experience of the Forest would have been rather impressionistic had I left as soon as I had the requisite progress.

And it would be a shame to leave so early, because this was a delightful new world of mystery and wonder, with engrossing text and beautiful art, and more variety than I had expected to see; it really felt at first as if new cards would never stop coming. If it got a little grindy towards the end, that was only because I stayed far more than I was supposed to (waiting for the final few unexplored branches to reappear), and it was still absolutely worth it. The mechanics would also have impressed me had I not been familiar with them from the Flash Lay, but here they felt more natural, and the unknown elements (both the obstacles and not knowing initially how much progress was needed to move on) were appropriate in this setting.

I'm really excited about this. I enjoyed Apis Meet and Caution very much, and everywhere I go I am struck by the sheer novelty of the Elder Continent (I'd never been across the Zee before), but it's the Bleeding Forest that felt the least like London. It's worth the price of admission by itself, and at least in terms of gameplay it's a definite highlight of the story. Well, the story so far. I have a decision to make before I can move on...

    Sestina Valdis wrote:
@Meat Machine: Which part of the story are you at currently? If you're in Apis Meet, eh, take note of your deputy's hint: free foreigners cannot travel South...

I remember reading this (without the spoiler, which I have removed from the quotation because it wouldn't display properly) and thinking, "Really, how hard could it be to find an option?" And then I couldn't find it myself. The place from which one departs was the very first I visited in Apis Meet, but it only had the one (generic) branch, so I didn't think to return later in case something else appeared. Is it possible that losing the Cherty quality unlocked the other branches? Does anyone know?

    @Valiant:
There are options to change one quirk to 14 while completely removing the opposite quirk. For example, my main picked the 14 Hedonist option, which got rid of all her Austere. I believe that, in order to play each one, you need at least 4 of its opposite quirk (at least I think it's 4). So, to remove all your Austere and get Hedonist 14, you need at least 4 Austere.

There's also an opportunity to get rid of all your menaces via Absolution, if you don't want to touch your quirks.

All of these are done via drinking various potions and things that the Bishop offers, as far as I'm aware. I didn't echo the choices though.
I wouldn't count on it. Seeking is probably low on a very, very long list of things FBG has in the pipes right now.
I didn't find this option, so it may only appear if you have Stains, but are no longer actively Seeking the Name. There used to be a Fate option in Flute Street that did that as well.

If you're ready for Part II, go to Wolfstack and get on a boat for the Elder Continent.

This is a little tricky, so pay heed to the warning: Should you choose to travel there, your own ship can get a one-time exemption from losing the zailing values reset upon voyage. However, should you zail back, the values are then reset. Just a warning for those who may have some things they do not want reset, especially Dramatic Tension. Should you travel over there without the exemption, but zail back, then that exemption will work as intended. (I'm leaving this unspoilered if this was an unintended setup of the story so Failbetter can fix it for both journeys.)

Assuming that losing deputies via the risky path doesn't lock the way to gain their acquaintance, prison should work fine. The SFiG fate-locked option for his acquaintance is just if you have reached SFiG 54.

    I did.

This actually would significantly change my character's views on Snuffers. It's kind of a depressing story. I mean she questions what they are and their actions. Hell, she often wonders if it was a wise idea to let [spoilers]the Big Rat live and if she should be occasionally assisting the teeth.[/spoilers]

But if she were to come into contact with this piece of knowledge in-game, well, the Bishop would immediatrly receive blatant favoritism and she'd be much kinder to Snuffers overall.

Tell me about it. Savorybiscuits generally goes out of his way to be a decent individual, and has made a career out of making London safer by thwarting monsters, whether they be zee-dwelling, face-stealing, soul-swindling, or... The Vake.

I'll chalk up my earlier efforts to expunge the Snuffers due to unpleasant encounters in New Newgate and beneath the Carnival. But the Bishop of St. Fiacre's account does make me feel a twinge of remorse for the indiscriminate slayings/shootings/explosions.

My Vake-hunter had the opposite problem. He was terribly traumatized by having to kill one of the snuffers he encountered, as he had grown rather fond of the character, and as a result, he couldn't bring himself to harm any others, despite worrying that he was letting them continue to hurt innocent people. Finding out that not all of them were evil has helped ease his conscience considerably.

Most of the Caution and Bleeding Forest qualities like "A Little Comfort" and qualities related to the Huz disappear after you finish your Elder Continent expedition, right? Or do you mean royal-blue feathers, solacefruit, and that kind of thing? Also, on which card do you actually build the Huz their palace? I found an echo of that bit but I can't tell how to get there.

You'll get a special but fairly simplistic menace reduction event in the place, where you essentially just click on two options, occasionally getting items and occasionally getting menaces, until you hit around 2 and return to where you were.

Yes you can. I'm fairly certain you can't even make her your deputy during Flint part I, since you need the Woman in Yellow, not the Seared Snuffer for that. You get an opportunity to appoint her after leaving for Caution.

Has anyone figured out how to help the Huz with their Palace? I couldn't seem to find a card for that.

Also, you can increase chertiness in the forest if you...
...let the Huz infest your clothes, and then ignore them when they show up as an Obstacle. Also, you want to avoid "mingling your tears with both" of the figures in Yearning.
If I started part 1 in November early access, but don't plan to compete it until the new year due to a time sensitive grind I am on, is there anything special I need to do now to ensure I'll keep access to part 2 later? The new introduction storylet for December said to go to the house of chimes (as is normal for all ES) but when I got there, there was no new story. And since progressing a story out of the house is how you normally prove you had access to chimes in the appropriate month, this makes me concerned that I will lose the story if I don't complete part 1 this month. Can anyone confirm this one way or the other?

You can return to Apis Meet, but not to Caution or the Bleeding Forest. I wasn't sure about this myself so I went back to Apis as soon as I finished the story in London. You can play through as many days in Apis as you want, but the options to travel to Caution with Wombwell & Co. are gone.

Which is, in itself, kind of odd - on leaving Apis Meet, I got the message that "[You can return at any time, and spend another day in Apis Meet; but after each day you must leave again, either for London or for the deeper South.]". South's unavailable, even so? ...Although I guess that makes sense given that you've been directly told to leave Caution.

Unrelatedly, I wonder how much time passes when you're flinty? Time passes strangely in the Neath, so it makes sense that it wouldn't affect anything in London - but... still an interesting thing to consider.

It seems we caught a mistake in this (wonderful) story. it was written to note the options when the Tree expires during the Exceptional Story part of course, but not modified for the location left to you after the Exceptional Story part of it was over.
Unless somebody can show me a way "South" again Failbetter needs to somehow do an edit for those flagged as "completed" the story having Apis Peak in their Zailing locations for this.

Just wanted to chime in and say I absolutely loved this one. Never saw the woman in yellow again after the fire, not sure why. Guess she didn't make it. But I had a bucket of fun. Those tender moments with my old mucker the Regretful Soldier added emotion to what otherwise would have been an entirely mercenary affair. So glad I managed to keep him whole and, well, not made of stone. I think I shall cherish his friendship even more now.

    More like this, please. smile

Edit: Was great to find out more about the Elder continent and the snuffers, too. A really fun romp.

Well, with Sacks' arrivals, so too has Silas come back into my character's life. Which is... maybe a little bit of a shame? Being able to reattain Silas's acquaintance when he had finally found peace in Flint is maybe not very narratively satisfying.

On the other hand, what would replace Day 8? A conspicuous absence of Shacksh, where your Melancholy increases and you think back to your adventures in the South?

Does it have to be permanent peace? Someone could have plied him with wine there after a few short months, and perhaps he felt sufficiently reinvigorated to return to his old life. Maybe. I'm reaching here. After all, I spent quite a long time as a statue and still returned home during Christmastide, with my eight assistants in tow. I have some options to choose from in terms of explaining this to myself, but none is perfectly satisfactory.

    None will ever be.

A rather strange outcome for me and my deputy: I chose "all shall be well... sometimes," thinking it would only mean I would be punished with stat loss or menace zones, and I'm a big girl and I can take it. Well… long story short, my deputy, the Regretful Soldier, did not return to London with me.

  • So I returned to London minus a Soldier, and yet I found that when I returned, a card previously drawn to my hand remained: "How will the Regretful Soldier's tale end?" Previously, I played through the conversation with him at the House of Chimes and left the resulting card in my hand indefinitely since I don't want to spend money on the Soul Trade story at this particular moment. Apparently there are no "Acquaintance: Regretful Soldier" requirements on the card, and there it sits, despite the fact that, well... the Regretful Soldier's tale has ended, and not in a way reflected on the card.

I don't know if this is something that deserves a bug report or not.

  • "You unlocked this with Caught Up in a Soldier's Heartbreaking Tale 7." I guess it's completely separate from Acquaintance: Regretful Soldier, of which I currently have none. (…sob) (Melancholy is increasing!)

    Anyway, I reported it.

Yes, it's definitely possible to replay it with a lot of Fate. I don't think you've missed out on anything so far, so you're good there!

Besides that, I'm about to hop off the boat ride. I noticed that there are 3 options of places I can pick, if I choose polytheam, may I then take another boat to apes meat.

You probably can, but shouldn't. If you are not familiar with Polythreme or have a reason to go there, you really shouldn't be there, and at your stats, you don't need to go to Polythreme.

The Word would have made it a bit more convenient gathering resources in Part 2, but it is not a significant advantage. More importantly, you can give the Sister a fabulous makeover in Apis Meet.

We don't know. Or at least I don't know, which is why I decided to play it safe and keep Delmar's stains.

You'll need to get the Road of Excess quality, or something like that. I think there's two cards that can give that to you? I seem to recall two cards involving bees, and you might be able to start that little mini quest through either of them.

A couple people seem to have echoed it, although no word on what the effects are (I don't have access to any accounts with stained souls, so I couldn't tell you, but maybe one of them could):

I'm not quite finished yet, so I haven't read the thread. Has anyone tried the &quotUnstain your soul&quot option? I'm terribly tempted to experience more Seeking content after so long, but it is going in the opposite direction. I'd love it if someone could link me to an echo of the result.

The effects are exactly as advertised. The Bishop is apparently a man of his word.

Any side effects though? Wounds, quirks, that kind of thing?

Does anyone know if it is somehow possbile to raise Cherty again after finishing Flint? I guess it would have to be in Apis Meet, at least I didn't notice any new storylets anywhere else.

I've recently spent an afternoon at the Biblioclasm in Apis Meet and lost my last point in Cherty. This replaces the 5 Echo option with a 2.5 Echo option, making the so-so carousel basically worthless (dropping from 1.4 EPA to 0.9 EPA if I calculated correctly).
