A wonderful story; this section in particular really tickled me.
I feel like I somehow missed out on a lot of topics of conversation with a certain gent. Despite exploring every option available (to the best of my limited capabilities) I could only cycle through:
The Uttershroom, Love, Family, Souls
Now I'll never know what he had to say on the subject of apiculture.

I liked it. I always like conversations, and I liked that some past RP decisions could come through and that I could extend the story and still make reasonable RP decisions for myself.
Very mild spoiler about the mechanics of investigating a salon:
I didn't realize I'd lock myself out of various storylets so quickly, so I'm sorry I didn't try showing off my silent soul when I had the chance, but that's a minor thing.

I refused the Deviless at first. Then, I decided to go along with her a little longer, to see if an opportunity to more skilfully undermine her agenda presented itself. It did.
Also, on playing through as Hubris, I just ran across the Infamous Bore, who may be my new favourite background character.

Count me in the disappointed camp. There's only so far that I'm willing to twist the character of my main, and delivering a bishop to a deviless for vague and threatening reasons is past that point. My big problem is that if you decline to do the task, you just give up.
I've an alt who killed a devil out of curiosity and has robbed the Bazaar and the Brass Embassy many times, and he just walks away from an opportunity for a valuable soul to add to his collection? And another alt, who decides to buy the blessed thing, and I'm having a hard time justifying his decision.
Interesting lore snippets though.

I have to say that I was pretty profoundly disappointed with Discernment. The initial premise ("Someone has stolen the (supposed) soul of Salome!") had me hoping for some very cool lore and a story of slightly larger scope than this, and those hopes were dashed thoroughly 'pon the rocks. Lost in Reflections was genuinely staggering--everyone agrees on that. Cut with Moonlight, while a little janky in terms of narrative continuity, did a fantastic job of suggesting huge underlying scale. The Court of Cats was weird, mysterious and lore-laden enough (not to mention mechanically original enough) to meet with my wholehearted approval. The Last Dog Society was dark, deliciously factional, and put the player in the kind of genuinely uncomfortable position only good IF can. I was not yet an EF when Haunting came along the first time 'round, and haven't purchased it with fate yet, so I cannot speak to its accomplishments/areas of lack. Discernment provided...
some mildly amusing dialogue, a little bit of insight into how devils think/socialize, and... what? Slightly different dialogue trees based on what path you took in another fate-locked story years ago? A very straightforward "special offer" on a relatively common status item? A slightly interesting new item attainable only through one choice path? What did it provide in terms of narrative? Where was the pathos? ([banging fists on the table]: "want PATHOS! I wann'it!!" I do come from the frustrated Pratchett toddler school of criticism...)
I dunno, it just seemed like it wasn't even trying to accomplish much of anything--I almost prefer unrealized ambition to aims this (apparently) modest. I would actually love a PM from someone who REALLY liked it detailing their thoughts/appreciations; when I "just don't like" a work, I always want to know what about it was "broadly" unimpressive, and what aspects provided others with an experience wholly unlike my own. edited by Speethling on 10/13/2015

To answer my own question above, in case anyone else is stumped: the requirement is Intimate of Devils 5 and no YvoIC (which I did have).
For the early-exit option (involving a certain betrayal): http://fallenlondon.storynexus.com/Profile/Leo~Waynswood?fromEchoId=6773476
For convincing the UP to... maintain the status quo, I don't think there are any rewards, just as (I don't believe) there are any material rewards in any other endings (unless I am missing something really obvious). The main text is: http://fallenlondon.storynexus.com/Profile/mikey_thinkin?fromEchoId=6780149 and the two options are: http://fallenlondon.storynexus.com/Profile/mikey_thinkin?fromEchoId=6780377 and http://fallenlondon.storynexus.com/Profile/Nigel~Overstreet?fromEchoId=6647572 (but it's just text and some quirk changes).
As for what I thought of the story overall:
I really liked the story and the writing. In terms of lore I dread to commit heresy but I think this is my favourite story to date, trumping even July. While July was excellent it felt slightly inconsequential (in terms of real lore gained) because it all never really happened. This story provided many glimpses about devils, which I loved. To name some highlights:
* While the devil-bee relationship is relatively common knowledge on the forums in terms of actual game content it's not trivial to come across. This story further reinforced it in a way that's more generally accessible.
* The fact that the John-the-Baptist bearing orchid wasn't common knowledge to a very knowledgeable devil was very interesting, suggesting that somehow the Elder Continent is not where devils have spent a lot of time.
* Most significantly this little tidbit: http://fallenlondon.storynexus.com/Profile/mikey_thinkin?fromEchoId=6772983 - It's never been clear what exactly devils do with the souls and while it's been generally acknowledged that they do not consume them that seemed to contradict the Infernal Somelier attitude (in the Infernal conversion storylets) of treating souls as having flavour. This new snippet suddenly throws doors on all sorts of new speculation: Souls need to to be in constant motion and devils are somehow responsible for effecting that motion; this has odd analogies with Rubberies exchanging amber to pass around vital essence. And the individual souls don't matter in this process, which causes some despair to discerning devils like the deviless and the Infernal Somelier - their job (whatever it may be) requires them to disregard the relative merits of different souls but their sensibilities urge them to seek out what they consider valuable ones.
In addition we are having more tie-ins to SS and the Blemmigan Affair is being cemented is one of the more consequential Fate stories to do (along with the Trade in Souls). We also got more exposure to the Bishop, who is shaping up to be quite a major character along with his other appearances in the game. I was though disappointed that more wasn't made of his snuffness when we were investigating him.
Finally, we have clamoured after previous ESs to have our prior choices to be more reflected in the available options and this story had this amply.
However.
I think given it's specific mechanical implementation this was a poor choice for a Fate story. To rephrase - I believe this story has to be either free or have a different mechanical structure. The reason I enjoyed this story so much is because I played it on a few alts *and* spent several hours scouring other peoples' journals. Once all the bits were gathered together the story really shined. But if you can't do that then the story comes across as abrupt and disjointed. Now if the story were free that in itself wouldn't be an issue because players would freely discuss it and crowdsource the overall picture quite quickly. But that is not possible with the fate-locked content.
Just to reiterate. I am not saying that this story should be free per se. Only that it ought to have been free with this specific mechanical structure. And given that it wasn't intended to be free it needed to have a different structure.
Finished (with 31 Taking a View on Abstraction.) Excellent lore, writing, and characters. I'd very much enjoy a sequel in a future exceptional story, or as main content.
I'll agree with being confused and disappointed by the mechanics, but I'm glad that something new was attempted! Innovation is always worth the effort.

Just finished this. It was written very well - but, at least in the path I took, it was rather short.
I refused to bring the Bishop to the Deviless. There is no circumstance under which my character would do such a thing, particularly considering how heavily the Deviless implied that she would harm the Bishop. My character is Closest to the Church, a Shepherd of Souls, and despises the work of devils. It was a bit disappointing to have the story cut short. I would have preferred it to continue in some other way and forego the reward.
We've amended the rewards on the final "Return the soul to its original home" option of this story. It now grants the intended, more generous, value. If you chose this option before and received the lesser rewards, drop us a support ticket and we'll apply the difference.

I liked it! It was nice getting a unique item for my Spirifer. I'll have to decide whether my main will go through the trouble of getting Salome's Soul; Gloria had most of the needed Brandy already, so it was less of a hassle.

I enjoyed the story, but as others have said it was quite short. During the salon progress was also fast enough to prevent choosing most of the options, which was a bit disappointing.

Huh, I just noticed that the text says "a greater value in Legal Documents and Collections of Curiosities." This is kind of misleading for newer players, I think -- if it's actually 3 of each, then they're losing out on 87.5 echoes. Even if it's a "greater value" in terms of number of turns it takes to gain a Coruscating Soul vs. number of turns it takes to get the documents & collections... well, I guess that's true unless you're unlucky at the Fidgeting Writer!

Well I'm not not getting the Soul of Salome, even if it's the same as all my other Coruscating Souls. (Bring my the Soul of Salome... on a silver platter!)
Although funnily enough, while converting up some Brilliant Souls for brandy I got the rare success that gives you a Legal Document.

I was rather annoyed when the "Greater Value" for turning in the Soul at the end gave me 225 echoes worth for my 312.5 echoes soul. Would not have done it if I'd know that.
Also, with Persuasion (not sure how much, I had 100% chance with 213 at the time) you can get the 100 brandy during the story as payment/incentive to go persuade the Bishop, which you can later use to buy the Soul.

Are there conversational paths I'm missing? Or is the list of conversational paths that you get when you hover the non-zero-option prerequisites all possible conversational paths for ALL conversations ever implemented in the game? I think it's the latter, but I'd like to be sure, please.

I also just completed it. I enjoyed the writing, and the content was well matched to my character.
As a Soulless Spirifer, the fact that the storyline centred around a Soul was great, and I enjoyed the extra choices available. I do sometimes have an internal battle with some choices between those I want to take, and those that use qualities that I only have due to fate-locked storylines and such. This particularly effected my final choice - I wanted to convince her to do the abstraction anyway, but in the end did it myself due to the fact it was 'special'. Oh well, I'm sure the memento will look good on my mantlepiece... I'd hoped I might shift it with Hell's Fence though.

Fascinating and good to know, Frederick Tanah-Chook! Thanks!
Thanks for the echoes in your profile. That's just the sort of outcome that I actually would have wanted. I just didn't want to agree to go along with the Deviless without knowing whether such a chance would be available. If my character was locked into doing something so awful, I would have been appalled. If the game had given the option to go along with her plan while specifying that I intended to undermine it - thus telling me that I'd at least have a chance to do so - I would have gone with that.
edited by Zareen Bakara on 9/24/2015

This exceptional story was the best so far in my opinion...it had depth and interesting dynamics with choices.
If you want to make out like a bandit, buy Salome's soul, then extract a queer soul and return the Salome soul for profit. Salome's soul is just a corusicating soul anyway, while Utterpersonage's is unique.
Yeah, I did the same thing - got all conversational-y up in the attic, was so ready for more, and then it just... ended. Granted, the game warned me and it felt soo right to
once again stick it to the devils and flat out refuse (and undermine them even more by warning the Bishop)
but I knew I'd miss out on content and that's never quite as fun. Will replay later just to see the story, don't care about rewards so much as missing out on excellent writing. But it was fun to at least see references to things you get to see more of in Sunless Sea, so that's always something edited by Zakator on 9/26/2015

It is probably fine to disable AdBlock on Fallen London, since the sole "ad" is for Sunless Sea and some such and not very obstructive.
A little nit-picking - I love the art for both the Deviless and the Mushroom-dude, but the card art is quite zoomed out and ends up looking like early FBG artwork instead.
On that note, I hope we will get to see them again.

By uncapped I mean it can be increased forever, even though no apparent content unlocks after values 5 or 10.
If you're curious, each of the three qualities I posted increments by 1, presumably because they are story-specific so future-proofing is unnecessary. Taking a View on Abstraction and Discovering Events at a Salon do linger after the story, though, so we might see those resurface in future. edited by TheThirdPolice on 10/6/2015

re: Enthusiastic Urchin: Discernment The opportunity card says to give it a rating out of 5, but I don't know that '3 stars' is sufficient feedback and here seemed the best place to share my thoughts. (Spoilers ahead, if you've not played it.)
I enjoyed it, I really did. But the execution felt lacking. Admittedly I've been spoiled by the past few, and my Spirifer's Fork and the chance to obtain a unique soul did steer my actions far more than would otherwise have happened. But I can't help but feel the soul of Salome was more of a MacGuffin than anything else. I never found it, I didn't have the opportunity to go back and search some more, and could easily have been replaced with an "I left my decorative party hat at the salon. Can you please find it for me?" for all the difference it made. Heck, I don't even know who or what Salome is - and it's from the forums I learnt that the item itself was just a generic coruscating soul.
As a character who had his soul removed (The Quiet Deviless was luckier than I ) then moped a bit and eventually decided soullessness wasn't such a big deal after all, collecting souls isn't an issue - so I didn't miss out on story in the same way that Soul Shepherds did. But I still feel there was more to that story that I could have explored, but didn't get the chance to. I want to give it 4/5, because it explored some interesting stuff and I got a unique thing out of it (which I'm *hopeful* will find a use in another story someday), but it ended rather suddenly and I felt that I'd thoroughly failed in the task that brought me there in the first place. So, three stars.
I had a lot of fun with the story, since I'm playing a character who had his soul taken against his will and ended up a miserable wreck because of it. For the same reason, he also HATES devils. So having to go to a devil's party and talk to a guy who is practically DYING to sell his soul REALLY got under his skin. So I really enjoyed the first part and thought it was fun to play and the story really interesting.
But my character would never help a devil, even if she threatened him, and he'd never risk hurting the bishop either, so I ended up going nowhere. Which was a shame since, although my character didn't really care about getting the soul, he did want to at least try and help the Poet (not sure if you actually can, but he wanted to try).
It would have been cool if maybe those of us who alerted the bishop had some sort of option to continue. After all, he basically says he already knows the deviless is after him and doesn't seem to care much, so why not an option to have him say something like "Let's beat her at her own game. I'll pretend to let you kidnap me but really we'll be working together against her." Or something similar (I don't know if this would be consistent with his character since, not having played to the end, I don't know what anyone's actual endgame was). But perhaps something like that could have worked out to let those of us who are playing more moral or compassionate characters finish the story.
All in all, I'm not really mad about it (the game did give me fair warning, after all), just a bit disappointed. Like I said, it was an interesting story and I wish I could have played more of it. edited by Kukapetal on 9/26/2015
* Most significantly this little tidbit: http://fallenlondon.storynexus.com/Profile/mikey_thinkin?fromEchoId=6772983 - It's never been clear what exactly devils do with the souls and while it's been generally acknowledged that they do not consume them that seemed to contradict the Infernal Somelier attitude (in the Infernal conversion storylets) of treating souls as having flavour. The implications of that are astounding... edited by Grenem on 10/27/2015 edited by Grenem on 10/27/2015
