The next step in following my Light Fingers ambition is to go to the place where the mad ones go. Is there any way I can do this, without losing my dreams progress?

There is:
Honeyed Laudanum: 9 Fate
and once there
Set Fire to the Mirror: 11 Fate
You don't lose all your dream progress anymore, so not really too bad an experience.
I'd suggest using the mirror at the Carnival for simplicity. You may also want to bring along a Tincture of Vigor, not required but is beneficial.

Much appreciated. As I've only recently rid myself of all loathsome dreams, I have no plans of plunging into madness just yet. 'Spose I'll get there when I get there.

I don't want to spoil, but there is a very decent "weapon" reward after you complete the nightmare section and the bit just after it.
I was still running around with a prison shiv, so it was a decent jump for me.
I'd head over just as soon as the Feast finishes up
