Specifically things like unwanted residences and crafted PoSI items. The precise problem, of course, are the cards that these possessions add to the opportunity deck. Many of these are things a player might get early on without fully understanding the negative impact they'll have down the line, or that might be useful at one time, but then later lose their utility and become a drag.

Why is it impossible to be rid of them? Is there any chance this might ever be changed?

Many times these questions have been asked. I don't know if anyone ever asked FB directly and got an answer.

Just in case you didn't know, it's possible to get rid of ALL lodgings during SMEN. I did just that for my main char this Christmas. (Christmas is the best time for doing this because you can go get the top-notch + Remote lodgings of your choice at Penstock's immediately afterwards wink)

That seems like an unnecessarily drastic step. I don't see any good reason to bar players from selling lodgings. After all, what kind of housing market is it, exactly, where you can only buy?

One where you have the option to own 400+ weasels?

Aye, but not all of us are looking to do SMEN - and for good reason. :-(

My first lodgings was Rooms Above A Bookshop, because I fancied my character as a bit of an Author (which he became, before moving on to other things). It's been a dead card in my opportunity deck ever since, and there's absolutely nothing that I can see in-game to rectify this mistake (aside from SMEN, apparently, but that's a mistake all of its own.)

Yes, because everyone wants to manipulate Peckish for 27+ levels, kill and imprison their character multiple times, and render their soul unable to be sold, just to get rid of a couple Lodgings cards. And it wouldn't even get rid of the Sardonic Music-Hall Singer or the Starving Artist!

Any non-harmful social actions except plant battles and affluent photographers!

You are at the gate. You are freezing. Suddenly, a messenger bat swoops down and shatters on the deck. You pick up the freezing paper and unfold it gently so it doesn't crack. Who would dare contact you at your most important of crossroads?

"hey can I get some money for booze -Starving Artist"

...Of course.

It's weird how easy it is to lock yourself into things in this game. We've complained a lot about it over the years but nothing is done, which leads me to think it's a design decision. However, I simply can't fathom what the intent here is.

Ignacious, the Licentious Scholar, he will accept most social invitations, including boxed cats and affluent photographers (but only betrayals), though he is absent-minded and might take more time than entirely necessary. He apologizes.

Nah, it's just that it's work to make these things sellable, and it's super-low priority work, there's always something more important to implement.

For a browser game that claims your decisions count, I do think it is intended to be this way. Big Grin
And same goes for the asymmetric design.

Also, a couple of changes lately made some lodgings more profitable - one gives a bottle of Giant wine, another gives a Society favor. So perhaps instead of making it so you can sell them, which could be bothersome, similar options could get added to the other two lodgings once you reach POSI?

Those aren't new changes; they've been like that for ages.

But I do agree that it would be lovely to have that kind of option, if we can't get rid of an item.

Are you saying that's somehow not a totally reasonable thing to do? Whaaaaa?

You either don't care about a subpar card deck or you want to optimize your character and therefor aim for the Seven-Fold-Knock. Don't be a hypocrite and get over with it already!

Seeking for Fun and Profit aside, I do agree that the ability to sell Lodgings and various Expanded Inventory possessions is long overdue: apparently it was already in the pipeline back in 2015, but got stuck to a side or something? It could be due to a change in design policy, but that would seem weird, as the game already has a lot of good ways of luring us away from all-out min-maxing (SMEN, Renowns, SotC, Poet Laureate, and so on), and there doesn't seem to be much in-setting justification, either. My character could just toss the unwanted keys into a river, or "park" their Landau unlocked and unattended in the middle of Spite, and neither of those would be close to the most reckless things they've done! (The Gymnasium would be a bit trickier to dispose of, but I would be willing to re-hire the Strong Backed Laborers to put it back where it originally was.)

And this doesn't affect just late-game players, either: on the Discord we've reached a point where newcomers are routinely warned against buying those things, as if they were traps some sort (and they kind of are) - which probably doesn't make for a good early impression.

Perhaps now, when Skies and the redesign are complete... One can hope...

Perhaps we could donate them to the compassionate widow who took us in or feed them to a Salon? They could simply be sold... or we could be tempted to do something spectacular with them, and lose them in the process, which would be better in terms of "story over min-maxing."

Something like this would definitely be appreciated, considering that I just bought a duplicate lodging key by mistake (goodbye, whispered hints...)

After leaving the game in 2014 and returning after 5 years, this thread definitely deserves another bump.
