EXCEPTIONAL STORY: FLINT PART I, KNIFE OR CANDLE

&quotLet’s speak of the South. Of a place of flint.&quot

In the bright heart of the Elder Continent lies a prison built to hold a pretender-god. You’ll see what lies there. But first you’ll need to steal an instrument of power from the lair of the Order Vespertine. And that’s the easy bit.

Flint is a special Christmas treat: a two-part Truly Exceptional Story. Part I is coming on 29 October, and Part II will follow on 26 November.

Each part on its own is bigger than a standard Exceptional Story. (The first is more wide than long, but there’s a lot of meat on it. The second is, er, I’ve kind of gone nuts.)

Traffic with the inscrutable Bishop of St Fiacre’s; penetrate the mysteries of the Order Vespertine; and in Part II, be the first to see what lies behind the borders of the Presbyterate…

How does a two-part Exceptional Story work?

This is an experiment in two-part Exceptional Stories.

Regular subscribers will have access to the first part of the story in November. Anyone who is an Exceptional Friend in December will be able to play both parts of the story then.

We think it’s worth two months’ subscription, but if you choose to unsubscribe for a month, we’ll understand.

I’ve started playing just now and already love it! Thank you! I’m excited for all the lore and mystery.

You know, I’m curious about a certain decision you all make:
Namely, the crew you will put together and why. I chose as follows:
3 Bohemians. I don’t want to be bored on the trip.
3 more Subtle gentlemen. Intelect and subtly will get us though this trip.
And covering the badass section, who better to be my Deputy to a forigen continent full of danger then a man who invaded Hell? Granted, he failed, but that’s hardly his fault.

I think my team’s not half bad. Or VERY bad. I tend to change my opnion on them.
I’m waiting until after Hallowmas to really get into the story (can’t afford the actions right now), but this made me giggle.
Sir Fred’s party was half bohemians and half penitents, because, well, that’s just the sort of person I am. And the Forger can be my deputy, because I like the guy. I’m thinking Hubris will go toffs/bruisers/Soldier; Juniper, bruisers/penitents/Silas; and Esther, bohemians/bruisers/Singer.

Edit: Changed my mind; Hubris is taking the Singer and Esther the Soldier.
I haven’t gotten further than the House of Chimes (I don’t have actions to spare right now). I love the lore (I didn’t realise until just now why Sniffers eat candles).

Question about the pricing arrangement.

I understand that if you start in December then you have the whole story available but if you start in November and then carry on to play in December you get to play the first part early.

What happens if you play the first part early but then skip your December subscription? Will you have to wait the whole 3 month period for the second part to become available once you are able to resubscribe? And if so, will it be the usual full price of 40 Fate or would a discounted 25 Fate price be available if you already played the first half?

(I am just trying to establish how many alts I can pay for for the whole 2-month duration if I start in November)

I’m curious about what angle others took on going into the Dish and Spoon – I went for the Shadowy route to steal some things, and that turned out to be

quite a lot of wine, in a single item.

The other routes sounded like they might result in some additional lore (watchful), or stat increases (dangerous), or maybe menace reduction (persuasive)?

This has strengthened my love of The Bishop so far.

Fantastic! Cool items, cool qualities, very cool story.

Now I just have to worry about my choices for a month! Ah, well: at least I got a (spoilery) cool mantelpiece item out of the deal, even if it might not be the most innocent of items to keep in your living room.

A brief (and unspoilery) note: in &quotI appreciate the consideration&quot, your Forceful increases and your Subtle drops. It seems like that should probably be reversed, given the choice you’ve just made?

Also, did anyone else notice that items can now have qualities? All the Vespertine medals from F&C now have “Recognized by the Order Vespertine (1)” and there’s a new interface on some storylets to pick an item (or status?) that has that quality. It’s a neat little way to group multiple items that might allow for smoother backwards compatibility, I guess?

BUT WHAT IF QUALITIES ON ITEMS ALSO END UP GETTING QUALITIES? Where does this rabbit hole end?!?

Thanks. Changed!

Talking with the Bishop appears to be an easy way to accumulate Mysteries of the Elder Continent with no risk or cost (save actions).

For either ethical or practical reasons, or simply opinion: how many is too many?

This is probably just for the Vespertine for the purposes of this story.
None of my four Ovate medals appear to have any new qualities.

I noticed something which may or may not be an oversight; I just wanted to check as it may well be part of some insidious plot going over my head.

I chose to relinquish the Knapt to the patroness in order to save the Bishop’s sister, yet after talking to the Bishop, receiving the Mountain-sherd, and concluding the story I was able to head back to the Dish and Spoon and take the Knapt for a second time from the knife drawer. This seems to be defeating the whole point of having to give it up in the first place. Am I mistaken in thinking this is a mistake?

That’s a bug, now fixed. Thanks for drawing it to our attention. Possessing both may break the second part of the story, and it’ll be a lot harder to unpick once you progress - if you get in touch with support@failbettergames.com I’ll fix your qualities for you.

So, I don’t know anything about silas other than that he is mysterious and drunk. What qualities does he have that might make me choose him for the expedition? He doesn’t sound too compelling, especially given I’d have to wait until Christmas to meet him, but I’m curious nonetheless.

Addy’s going with a set of the pious and a set of the ruffians. Seems like a good balance. A bit stumped on who to take as my deputy- on the one hand, the Soldier seems like he’d be the ‘best’ option (and probably the one Addy’d go with in-character), but on the other hand, I love the Forger, and constantly desire more things to do with him.

On the third hand, Silas is looking tempting. Since I HAVE him and all.

The only thing I know for sure is I’m about ready to adopt the Bishop.

Did anyone echo a different ending than the ones below? I’m curious about the &quotgood&quot ending that my character would never pick.
